About the Role:
The Galley Hand supports the safe and efficient operation of the vessel by assisting with food preparation, meal service, housekeeping, and sanitation of the galley and living quarters. This position plays an important role in maintaining a clean, organized, and comfortable environment for crew members and authorized personnel aboard the vessel. The Galley Hand assists with loading and storing provisions, maintaining inventories, cleaning common areas, and ensuring compliance with food safety, sanitation, and environmental standards. In addition to housekeeping and galley responsibilities, the Galley Hand participates in vessel safety, security, and emergency response activities as directed by the Master.
Minimum Qualifications:
- U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), STCW Basic Training, Passport
- Previous experience in food service, housekeeping, hospitality, marine, or industrial environments preferred.
- Food Handler or ServSafe certification.
- Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and kitchen utensils.
- Ability to lift, carry, and store provisions and supplies.
- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of vessel operations and emergency response activities.
- Must be eligible to work in a U.S. Coast Guard safety-sensitive position and comply with applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Vessel Cook with meal preparation, serving, and cleanup.
- Wash dishes, utensils, cookware, and galley equipment.
- Clean and sanitize the galley, dining areas, food storage spaces, and living quarters.
- Assist with loading, unloading, receiving, and storing food, beverages, and vessel supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness of refrigerators, freezers, pantries, and storage areas.
- Stock supplies and monitor inventory levels, reporting shortages to the Vessel Cook or Master.
- Collect, separate, and properly dispose of garbage and recyclable materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Assist with housekeeping duties, including cleaning common areas, staterooms, and heads as assigned.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of laundry facilities and assist with laundry duties as required.
- Report unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, or maintenance needs to the Master or Vessel Cook.
- Participate in vessel safety meetings, drills, and emergency response activities.
- Assist with the orientation and onboard training of new personnel as assigned.
- Comply with all company policies and applicable U.S. Coast Guard, environmental, and safety regulations.
- Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions exist.
- Wear and properly maintain required personal protective equipment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Master or company management to support safe and efficient vessel operations.
