Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Back-End Engineer (Java-Spring) based in Brazil.
This is an opportunity to contribute to a high-impact international project focused on scalable, production-grade backend applications and AI-powered capabilities. You will design and develop robust microservices and REST APIs using Java and Spring Boot, while working with modern cloud technologies. The role combines backend engineering with hands-on AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes experience in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. You will also integrate production-grade Large Language Models into backend workflows, helping bring intelligent features into real-world products. End-to-end ownership is central to the position, from architecture and development through deployment, monitoring, and production troubleshooting. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams across LATAM and internationally, with daily communication conducted in English. This is a fully remote contractor opportunity with consistent alignment to Central Time (CT).
- Design, develop, maintain, and continuously improve robust backend applications and RESTful APIs using Java and the Spring Boot framework.
- Build and evolve scalable microservices architectures, applying sound engineering principles to deliver reliable and maintainable production systems.
- Deploy, manage, and scale backend services on AWS using Docker and Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration.
- Integrate production-grade Large Language Models, including technologies such as Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini, into backend workflows and intelligent product features.
- Design and manage data layers using both SQL and NoSQL technologies, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Take end-to-end ownership of features, guiding them from architecture and implementation through deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production debugging.
- Collaborate with cross-functional and international teams to deliver high-quality software while maintaining strong standards for architecture, testing, reliability, and maintainability.
- Contribute to technical documentation and effective communication in English across development activities, meetings, and project documentation.
- Participate in an agile development environment, contributing to ceremonies, stand-ups, technical discussions, and collaborative problem-solving.
- Apply modern distributed-systems practices, with opportunities to work with event-driven architectures, distributed transaction patterns, and advanced AI capabilities.
- 4–7 years of hands-on professional experience developing production-grade backend applications, ideally at a Software Engineer II level or equivalent.
- Strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot, with proven experience designing and implementing robust REST APIs.
- Practical experience working with both SQL and NoSQL databases, including designing data layers for scalable applications.
- Proven experience deploying and managing backend services on AWS, with hands-on knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.
- Direct experience integrating production-grade AI models or Large Language Models such as Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini into software applications.
- Demonstrated ability to own features throughout their complete lifecycle, including deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production debugging.
- Strong understanding of backend engineering principles, microservices, system reliability, testing, and scalable software architecture.
- Fluent English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills for daily technical collaboration, documentation, and meetings.
- Strong problem-solving, ownership, collaboration, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in distributed and cross-functional teams.
- Experience with distributed transaction patterns such as Saga and Transactional Outbox is a plus.
- Experience with event-driven architecture and message brokers such as Kafka or RabbitMQ is desirable.
- Familiarity with Cucumber, Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), and automated testing is an advantage.
- Experience building autonomous AI agents is considered a strong plus.
- Availability to consistently overlap with teams working in Central Time (CT), including participation in key ceremonies, stand-ups, and collaborative sessions during standard Austin business hours.
- Work model: 100% remote, with the opportunity to work from Brazil as part of a distributed LATAM team.
- Contract: Full-time contractor engagement.
- International environment: Work on international projects and collaborate with diverse, globally distributed teams.
- Technical exposure: Hands-on work across Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, microservices, SQL/NoSQL databases, and modern AI/LLM technologies.
- Career growth: Exposure to challenging software engineering problems, modern architectures, cloud infrastructure, and emerging AI capabilities.
- Flexible collaboration: Remote-first environment with structured collaboration aligned to Central Time.
- Language: Daily communication, documentation, and interviews conducted in English.
