Job Description
The CNC Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC machines to produce precision components according to engineering drawings and specifications. This role requires advanced knowledge of CNC programming, machining processes, and quality inspection standards. The CNC Machinist ensures parts meet exact tolerances, performs program optimizations, conducts inspections, and supports continuous improvement initiatives. The role also requires collaborating with the manufacturing team and maintaining compliance with ISO quality standards and safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
CNC Programming & Setup
•Review engineering drawings, blueprints, work orders, job travelers, tooling instructions, and specifications to determine machining requirements, materials, tooling, tolerances, and setup needs.
•Create, modify, merge, and optimize CAM programs and G/M code for CNC machinery using Fanuc controls to improve efficiency, accuracy, and part quality.
•Perform complete machine setups, including material verification, tooling selection, tool presetting, fixturing, work offsets, machine alignment, and adjustment of dies, gauges, guides, and holding devices.
•Utilize Renishaw probing systems, including automated probing cycles, manual probe programming, and probe macro adjustments as needed.
Machining & Production
•Operate CNC Vertical Machining Centers, CNC Press Brake, CNC Waterjet, and other manual machinery to manufacture precision parts to tight tolerances based on drawings, GD&T, and customer requirements.
•Complete roughing, finishing, drilling, tapping, contouring, pocketing, and complex multi-axis operations while maintaining productivity expectations established by management.
•Manage multiple machines simultaneously when appropriate and monitor production cycles to maintain dimensional accuracy, part quality, and workflow efficiency.
•Monitor tool wear, perform tool offset adjustments, and use appropriate hand tools and measuring instruments to ensure proper clearances, dimensions, and specified tolerances.
•Build, modify, and maintain fixtures, work holding solutions, support tooling, and workstation inventory to improve setup repeatability and production readiness.
Inspection & Quality
•Perform First Article Inspections, in-process inspections, 100% inspections on new or critical components, and final quality checks using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, indicators, measuring tape, protractors, and other inspection tools.
•Verify machined components against quality standards, GD&T requirements, true position, concentricity, parallelism, flatness, datum structures, and customer specifications.
•Identify product defects, nonconformances, or dimensional issues and complete appropriate documentation, tags, and follow-up communication.
•Record production and inspection information, including quantities processed, test results, machine readings, dates, times, job traveler updates, and work order documentation.
Continuous Improvement
•Apply Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles to reduce setup times, improve workflow, increase throughput, and enhance program efficiency.
•Recommend, test, and support upgrades to cutting tools, feeds, speeds, fixtures, tooling, and machining strategies to improve productivity and quality.
•Create and maintain setup sheets, process documentation, standard work instructions, and accurate setup information for efficient and repeatable production.
•Support engineering, manufacturing leadership, and pilot run program prove-outs by troubleshooting machining challenges and communicating results to the Manufacturing Manager.
Teamwork & Leadership
•Train, mentor, guide, and provide technical direction to junior machinists and machine operators as needed.
•Collaborate with team members, supervisors, engineering, and management to resolve machining issues, meet production targets, and support organizational goals.
•Perform scheduled maintenance on CNC machinery and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with ISO quality standards, company policies, and established safety procedures.
•Takes ownership for completing assigned work, supporting new or different requests, and performing other related duties as assigned.
