Position Summary
The Vac Truck Assistant supports the Vac Truck Operator in the safe and efficient cleaning, flushing, and hydro-excavation of underground pipelines. This entry-to-mid-level field role provides hands-on training in vacuum excavation and utility cleaning operations, with a path toward becoming a licensed Vac Truck Operator. Ability to work early mornings, evenings, or occasional nights/weekends and respond to emergency call-outs as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in setting up and breaking down hoses, nozzles, and jetting equipment at each job site.
- Set up and maintain work zone traffic control, cones, signs, and barricades per site traffic control plans.
- Open, inspect, and secure manholes and catch basins; assist with confined space entry procedures as trained and certified.
- Guide hose placement and assist the operator during cleaning, flushing, and hydro-excavation operations.
- Monitor debris tank levels and assist with proper transport and disposal of extracted material at approved sites.
- Assist with locating and safely exposing underground utilities during hydro-excavation work.
- Clean, rinse, and stow hoses, nozzles, and equipment after each job to prevent damage and cross-contamination.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site, and immediately report hazards, spills, or equipment issues.
- Support the CCTV inspection crew with traffic control or manhole access when cross-assigned.
- Follow all safety protocols, wear required PPE and comply with company and OSHA/DOT safety standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must be reachable 24/7 for emergencies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior labor, construction, utility, or field service experience helpful but not required; on-the-job training provided.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL permit or willingness to obtain CDL a strong plus for advancement.
- Willingness to obtain confined space entry and traffic control certifications.
- Comfortable working with high-pressure water equipment and vacuum systems.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to work as part of a two-person crew.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs regularly (hoses, nozzles, equipment).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions for full shifts.
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work around open excavations, manholes, and roadways for extended periods.
- Ability to work early mornings, evenings, or occasional nights/weekends and respond to emergency call-outs as needed.
