Job Description
The Inbound Leader is responsible for directing and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the Receiving Department. This role provides hands-on leadership to the inbound team, overseeing the accurate and efficient processing of all incoming shipments from check-in through staged put-away. The Inbound Leader serves as the primary point of accountability for team performance, quality standards, safety compliance, and continuous process improvement within the receiving function.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Lead, coach, and develop Inbound Associates, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Assign daily work tasks, monitor team productivity, and adjust staffing allocation to meet inbound volume demands.
- Conduct on-the-job training for new team members on receiving procedures, equipment use, and safety protocols.
- Communicate shift priorities, updates, and performance expectations clearly to all team members.
- Escalate personnel concerns, attendance issues, and performance matters to management promptly.
Inbound Shipment Processing
- Oversee and participate in the receiving, inspection, and verification of all incoming shipments for accuracy, completeness, and condition.
- Ensure all part numbers and received quantities are confirmed against the receiving report before staging for put-away.
- Direct the breakdown of small part deliveries from master packs; ensure all items removed from master packs are properly identified with part numbers via stickers, hand-written labels, or tags prior to staging.
- Supervise the breakdown, count confirmation, and restacking of skidded deliveries in predetermined quantities for put-away.
- Report and document any shortages, damages, or product discrepancies; initiate investigations and coordinate resolution with appropriate stakeholders.
- Ensure timely processing of inbound shipments to meet operational SLAs and minimize dock-to-stock time.
Inventory & Warehouse Operations
- Oversee down stocking of shelves and pallet bays as needed to maintain proper slotting and accessibility.
- Ensure accurate restocking of completed customer returns to appropriate warehouse locations.
- Partner with Put-Away and Inventory teams to resolve discrepancies and maintain location accuracy.
- Support cycle count activities and physical inventory efforts as directed by management.
- Maintain proper organization and cleanliness of the receiving area and all associated warehouse zones.
Safety & Compliance
- Champion a safety-first culture; enforce all company safety regulations, policies, and procedures at all times.
- Ensure proper and compliant use of all warehouse equipment, including forklifts, pallet jacks, and scanning systems; provide refresher training as needed.
- Conduct regular safety observations and address unsafe behaviors or conditions immediately.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and internal SOPs related to materials handling, labeling, and ergonomics.
- Participate in safety meetings, incident investigations, and corrective action processes.
Process Improvement & Reporting
- Monitor and report daily inbound KPIs including receiving volume, accuracy rates, and productivity metrics.
- Identify operational inefficiencies and recommend process improvements to management.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Transportation, Inventory Control, and Operations leadership to resolve systemic issues.
- Assist with the implementation of new systems, procedures, and workflow changes as directed.
Preferred Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or vocational training in logistics, supply chain, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 2–3 years of warehouse receiving or inbound operations experience required.
- Minimum 1 year of lead, supervisory, or team leadership experience in a warehouse or distribution environment.
- Experience with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and RF scanning equipment required.
- Forklift and/or reach truck certification preferred; willingness to obtain certification required.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to motivate and hold others accountable.
- Solid understanding of receiving processes, inventory accuracy, and warehouse best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret shipping documents, packing slips, and purchase orders.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (Microsoft Office, WMS, email).
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 75 lbs. occasionally.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Comfortable working in a warehouse environment with varying temperatures.
- Must be able to operate warehouse equipment safely in a fast-paced environment.
