Grinder

Classification – FT Hourly

Reports to – Machining Supervisor

Job Description

Summary/Objective

The Grinder is responsible for setting up and operating OD grinding machines to achieve precise finishes and dimensions on various metals. This position requires a strong understanding of manual grinding techniques, tooling, and equipment operation to meet tight tolerances and customer specifications. The OD Grinder will work independently and within a team to ensure high-quality output, while adhering to safety standards and maintaining equipment to reduce downtime. Experience with CNC grinders or manual grinders is highly desirable.

Essential Functions

  1. Set up and operate manual grinding machines to grind and finish parts according to blueprints and specifications.
  2. Inspect parts for surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and proper tolerances using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, indicators).
  3. Select the appropriate grinding wheels, and tooling based on material type and part specifications.
  4. Adjust machine settings to ensure optimal cutting conditions, including wheel speed, feed rate, and cutting depth.
  5. Monitor machine operation and inspect parts regularly to ensure they meet quality standards.
  6. Perform routine preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on grinding equipment to minimize downtime and maintain optimal machine performance.
  7. Follow established safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe working environment.
  8. Document production activities, including machine setup, part inspections, and material usage.
  9. Collaborate with other team members to meet production goals and improve operational efficiency.
  10. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including grinding machines and tools.

Competencies

  1. Proven experience in an OD grinding role, with knowledge of manual grinding machines.
  2. Strong understanding of grinding principles, materials, and tooling.
  3. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and work orders.
  4. Proficiency in using precision measurement tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, indicators).
  5. Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving machine or part issues.
  6. Detail-oriented with the ability to meet tight tolerances and quality standards.
  7. Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machine operations.
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  9. Basic knowledge of machine maintenance and repair techniques.
  10. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with supervisors and team members.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This role operates in a job shop manufacturing setting, with regular exposure to moving machinery, coolant, and industrial noise. Proper PPE must be worn at all times.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires standing, bending, and manual handling of materials. Lifting of parts up to 50 pounds may be required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Hours are typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or weekend work to meet production deadlines.

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Proven experience as a grinder, particularly with manual grinding machines.
  3. Strong knowledge of grinding techniques, tools, and materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Minimum 2 years of experience in an assembly or production setting.
  2. Experience with basic quality control and inspection procedures.
  3. Certification in assembly processes or manufacturing-related fields is a plus.
  4. Knowledge of bar code scanning systems and production tracking tools.
  5. Familiarity with ergonomic work practices and safety standards.
