The Health Specialist supports implementation of health program in classrooms in compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards. Ensure identified health and dental needs are addressed and may provide basic first aid. Will perform data entry and generate computer reports. Coordinate with assigned nurse on medical or identified health concerns, and the Community Partnership Director for policy, procedure and day-to-day operations. Overtime may be required on evenings or weekends based on agency needs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform reviews of child health histories and assist with follow-up on any identified health concerns
  • Assist with referrals to providers for medical care, physical exams, immunizations, and in the development of health care action plans or individual education plans
  • Assist in establishing a source of ongoing and accessible medical and dental care
  • Verify status of immunizations as well as develop written plan to ensure subsequent immunizations are completed
  • Assist in obtaining required health screening documentation within 45 days of entry including height/weight, vision and hearing (if not noted on the physical examination), and dental screenings
  • Monitor and ensure first aid boxes and backpacks are fully stocked
  • Complete data entry and ensure that all pertinent information is printed and placed in children’s files
  • Perform parent notification in cases of emergencies
  • Effectively resolve conflict; remain calm in very busy or emergency situations
  • May involve interaction with educationally, economically, culturally, and racially diverse persons whose first language may not be English
  • Maintain on-going communication with contracted childcare nurse consultant and/or appropriate staff to ensure completion and coordination of services
  • Maintain confidentiality related to all aspects of the parents/children enrolled as defined by the Agency, State of Colorado and Federal regulations

Requirements:

Position Qualifications/Certificates/Licenses (Required):

  • Medical Assistant Certification or minimum of one year experience as a health assistant
  • Reliable vehicle, valid Colorado driver’s license, evidence of current vehicle insurance meeting the minimum Colorado state liability requirements
  • Compliance with other regulatory requirements as applicable

Desired Qualifications/Skills/Licenses/Certifications:

  • Bi-lingual (preferably Spanish/English)
  • Early Head Start/Head Start and/or early childhood experience preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, and staff
  • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred or willingness to obtain
  • Proficient in basic computer and documentation skills

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Safely lift a child or children with total weight of 50 pounds
  • Conduct activities involving substantial standing, walking and moderate sitting; stooping kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, twisting, and reaching on a frequent basis
  • Work with hands above shoulder height with a weight up to 20 pounds
  • Work with arms extended at shoulder height with a weight up to 20 pounds
  • Must be able to stoop, bend and kneel on the floor without assistance
  • Push, pull, playground equipment, art supplies, manipulate office equipment, etc.
  • Participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone and distinguish telephone radio/pager signals, alarms and other auditory tones
