Position Title: Youth Mentor

Department: Compliance

Reports To: Nicole Steck / BAGS Foundation Afterschool Program Coordinator

Location: BAGS Foundation - 541 Wolcott Street, Waterbury, CT

Rate of Pay: $17.50 - $20/hr

Position Summary

Assists the Afterschool Program Coordinator with the following duties and functions. The qualified candidate will work toward or already possess a degree in education, early childhood education, or a related field, have experience working with school-aged children, possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, and be available during after-school hours Monday-Thursday-Hours vary (up to 20 hours per week)- Hours subject to change based on organization need.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist to coordinate the daily operation of the after-school program.
• Create and coordinate athletics programs to enrich the student's experience, create workouts, and encourage healthy eating choices. Work with children and provide a safe, welcoming environment.
• Document and communicate with parents any accidents or incidents that have occurred with youth during programming
• Maintain positive relationships with families, children, and school personnel
• Responsible for preparing program space for each activity, to include organizing. supplies, organizing equipment and informing supervisor of needed equipment or supplies.
• Assist in maintaining and updating monthly activity calendars for program.
• Assist in coordinating special events (Holiday parties, talent shows, etc.)
• Daily set up and clean-up of program site.
• Support social/emotional development.
• Support student academics & reading.
• Attend mandatory staff meetings as scheduled.
• First Aid/CPR/ certification to be acquired within 1 month of hire.
• Other duties may be assigned.
• Regular and consistent attendance is considered an essential function of this position.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must be a current Post University student
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Working towards a degree in early childhood education, Education, psychology, or a related field preferred (may be substituted with years of experience)
  • 2+ years of experience working with School Aged Children.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Clean driving record and valid driver’s license required.
  • Knowledge of Child Development.
  • Awareness of Age-Appropriate curriculum activities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • All candidates for employment will be subject to pre-employment background screening for this position, which includes criminal background check and motor vehicle check.
  • Approved for FWS
