Job Summary

The Estimator is responsible for accurately and efficiently calculating the cost of print projects, providing detailed quotes to clients, and supporting the sales and production teams. This role requires a strong understanding of print processes, materials, and associated costs. The Estimator serves as a crucial link between sales, production, and the client, ensuring projects are priced competitively and profitably.

Responsibilities

  • Cost Calculation: Analyze project specifications (including size, quantity, paper stock, ink, finishing, etc.) and determine accurate material, labor, and overhead costs.
  • Quoting: Prepare detailed, clear, and professional cost estimates for diverse print projects, including digital, offset, large format, and specialty printing.
  • Software Proficiency: Utilize estimating software and other relevant tools to generate quotes and track pricing data.
  • Material Knowledge: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of paper stocks, inks, print processes, and finishing options to make informed cost decisions.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with sales representatives to understand client needs and provide timely and competitive pricing.
  • Production Liaison: Communicate with production staff to ensure feasibility of projects and obtain any necessary clarifying information for accurate estimates.
  • Vendor Coordination: Obtain quotes from external vendors (e.g., for bindery, specialty finishing, or outsourced print services) as needed and incorporate them into final estimates.
  • Database Management: Maintain and update cost databases, records, and price lists.
  • Quote Follow-up: Track proposals, follow up with clients as needed, and gather feedback to improve future estimates.
  • Problem Solving: Identify and resolve any discrepancies or inaccuracies in project specifications or cost calculations.
  • Process Improvement: Contribute to the development and implementation of efficient estimating processes.
  • Industry Awareness: Stay informed about print industry trends, new technologies, and material pricing fluctuations.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; a degree in a printing-related field is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in print estimating within a commercial print environment.
  • Technical Knowledge: Thorough understanding of print processes, paper types, inks, finishing techniques, and bindery options.
  • Estimating Software: Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., PrintSmith, EFI Pace, Avanti, etc.).
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and mathematical abilities to accurately calculate costs.
  • Attention to Detail: Must have a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey pricing information.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve issues related to estimating.
  • Team Player: Ability to work effectively with sales, production, and other team members.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (especially Excel) and other relevant software.
