Mechanical Superintendent – Heavy Civil Equipment in El Paso, Texas at Sterling Construction Company, Inc.

We are seeking an experienced Mechanic Superintendent to oversee the maintenance and repair operations for a large heavy civil construction fleet supporting a major data center project in El Paso, Texas.

This position will be responsible for managing a team of approximately 4–5 heavy equipment mechanics and up to 14 lube technicians, supporting a fleet of more than 240 pieces of heavy construction equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership experience in heavy equipment maintenance and a hands-on understanding of large-scale earthwork and site development operations.

The fleet includes dozers, excavators, scrapers, articulated haul trucks, motor graders, loaders, water trucks, and other heavy civil equipment.

1. Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the project maintenance department.
2. Supervise 4–5 mechanics and up to 14 lube technicians, including scheduling, workload assignments, training, and performance management.
3. Oversee preventative maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
4. Coordinate equipment inspections, repairs, troubleshooting, and scheduled maintenance.
5. Monitor the condition and availability of a fleet exceeding 240 pieces of heavy equipment.
6. Work closely with project superintendents and operations teams to prioritize equipment needs and minimize downtime.
7. Establish and maintain preventative maintenance schedules based on equipment hours, manufacturer recommendations, and project demands.
8. Coordinate major repairs, component replacements, and outside vendors when necessary.
9. Maintain accurate maintenance records, service histories, parts usage, and equipment status.
10. Help manage parts inventory and ensure mechanics and lube technicians have the materials necessary to complete repairs.
11. Monitor equipment downtime and identify recurring mechanical issues.
12. Promote a strong safety culture within the maintenance operation.
13. Ensure maintenance activities are performed in accordance with company safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements.
14. Assist with equipment utilization, replacement, and repair-versus-replace decisions.
15. Communicate equipment status and maintenance concerns with project leadership.
16. Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient maintenance operation.

5+ years of heavy equipment maintenance experience, preferably in heavy civil construction, mining, aggregate, or large-scale earthwork.

1. Previous experience leading or supervising mechanics and/or lube technicians.
2. Strong knowledge of diesel-powered heavy equipment and hydraulic systems.
3. Experience troubleshooting and repairing equipment such as dozers, excavators, scrapers, articulated trucks, motor graders, loaders, and similar heavy equipment.
4. Experience managing preventative maintenance programs for a large equipment fleet.
5. Strong understanding of equipment downtime, maintenance scheduling, and fleet availability.
6. Ability to prioritize repairs in a fast-paced construction environment.
7. Strong communication and leadership skills.
8. Ability to work closely with field operations and project management.
9. Computer skills and experience with maintenance/fleet management software is preferred.
10. Be able to physically lift 50 – 100 LBS.
11. Be able to regularly stand for long periods of time, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl
12. Specific vision abilities are required, which includes having close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
13. Perform mathematical problems.
14. Valid Commercial Driver License- Class A is required.
