We are seeking a qualified part-time Customer Service & Yard Associate to join our office in New Bern. This position supports daily operations at our equipment rental location by providing helpful service to customers, maintaining a clean, organized, and safe equipment yard, and assisting with the preparation, movement, and inspection of rental equipment.
Core Hours:
Monday 7am-1pm
Friday 12pm-5pm
Saturday 7am-5pm
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday hours are flexible
This is a hands-on, entry-level role for someone who enjoys working with customers and being outdoors. The successful candidate will take pride in keeping the facility professional and ready for business, learn the basics of rental equipment operations and maintenance, and support the team wherever needed. With training, strong performance, and demonstrated mechanical aptitude, this role could create an opportunity to advance into an equipment service technician or mechanic position.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers promptly and professionally in person and by phone.
- Assist customers with basic rental questions, equipment pickup and return procedures, and general location information.
- Direct customers to the appropriate equipment, service area, or team member.
- Help load and unload rental equipment and accessories.
- Check returned equipment and accessories for visible damage, cleanliness, fuel level, and completeness; report concerns to the supervisor or mechanic.
- Help ensure customers receive clean, presentable, and ready-to-rent equipment.
- Support rental paperwork, invoices, contracts, and payment processes as assigned.
- Communicate clearly with customers and coworkers about equipment availability, return status, and customer needs.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and professional equipment yard, parking area, shop area, wash bay, office exterior, and customer pickup area.
- Organize equipment, tools, attachments, and other rental materials in designated locations.
- Sweep, pick up debris, remove trash, and perform routine housekeeping throughout the property.
- Assist with washing, fueling, cleaning, and staging equipment for upcoming rentals, following company safety procedures.
- Perform basic pre-rental and post-rental visual inspections using company checklists.
- Assist mechanics, drivers, counter staff, and managers with general tasks as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered.
- Customer service, retail, construction, landscaping, warehouse, automotive, or equipment-related experience is helpful but not required.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to pounds regularly and perform physical work such as standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing in and out of equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Strong attention to safety, cleanliness, organization, and customer service.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Willingness to learn basic equipment inspection, maintenance, and rental procedures.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning as part of a team.
