Job Summary

The Police Operations Assistant works under the direction of the Operations Commander. This position performs various administrative and operational tasks within the Police Operations Center, designed to facilitate public safety and welfare throughout Hillsborough Township. Also acts as the department's Assistant Terminal Agency Coordinator.

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitors police communications and reports significant developments to the Shift Commander
  • Provides assistance to citizens and township employees by supplying information and documentation or directing them to the proper authority, both via phone and in person.
  • Searches and maintains files, updates records, sends & receives messages through in-house messaging, NCIC, and e-Agent
  • Processes NCIC entries, validations, and hit confirmations
  • Monitors FAX, NCIC printer & other related applications and distributes information according to established protocols
  • Communicates motor vehicle, criminal, and historical in-house information to field units, court personnel, and other law enforcement agencies
  • Compiles and prepares Monthly Statistical Report
  • Prepares Shift Commander's Daily Operations and Activity Reports
  • Serves as a liaison between Somerset County Communications and police personnel
  • Maintains various logs including but not limited to condition notification, wreckers, deer recovery, vehicle impound, and alarm notification
  • Maintains Domestic Violence TRO/FRO files
  • Video monitoring of prisoners
  • Matron duties as needed
  • Other administrative support and office duties as needed

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Required

  • Knowledge of common police communications and operations practices.
  • Proficiency in the use of NCIC, NJLETS, ATS, ACS, and Computer Aided Dispatch systems.
  • Knowledge of police department policies and procedures
  • Skill in applying police records management laws, rules, and regulations
  • Strong analytical, technical, and project/time management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to compile objective & measurable data and produce reports.
  • Proficiency with the full Microsoft Product Suite, Adobe, and other general office applications.
  • Ability to interact with the public under stressful conditions and maintain composure & a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Good collaboration skills and ability to work as part of a team as needed
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Broad knowledge of clerical or service areas.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of the geography and significant locations throughout Hillsborough Township
  • Experience with Larimore Public Safety System, Foveonics / Document Sync and Power DMS
  • Proficiency in the use of NCIC, e-Agent, ATS, ACS, and Computer Aided Dispatch systems.
  • Maintaining composure and a professional demeanor.
  • Bilingual (Spanish)

Education, Certifications, and Licenses

Required

  • Minimum formal education of High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of job-related experience
  • Complete training as a full access user for the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS) within 12 months of hire

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work for extended periods on computer-based tasks
  • The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds

Additional Information

  • Clearance of a background check
  • Valid NJ Driver's License
  • Department operating hours are 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday
  • May require occasional work outside of normal business hours, as directed by the Chief of Police
