Job Description

Landmark Construction was founded in 1965 and takes pride in delivering industry leading sitework and utility projects that shape communities and drive progress. Landmark is invested in smart growth, state of the art technology, career development and offers a flexible work environment with competitive compensation and benefits.

As a Sitework Estimator, you will play a pivotal role in our success by accurately assessing project costs, ensuring competitive bids, and contributing to the growth of our company. Your extensive experience in earthwork and utility estimating, coupled with proficiency in industry-standard software tools, will be instrumental in achieving our goals.

As a Sitework & Utilities Estimator you own an estimate from the page turn through submission and follow-up — quantifying the work, soliciting and leveling subcontractor and vendor pricing, assembling the proposal, and carrying the job through turnover to Preconstruction on award. Your experience in earthwork and utility estimating, together with proficiency in industry-standard software, will be instrumental in achieving our goals.

This position is filled at either the Estimator or Senior Estimator level. Both run the full bid process; the difference is the complexity of the work assigned and the degree of oversight.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Systems and Software

AGTEK. Primary takeoff platform for all scopes, earthwork and underground. Proficiency required.

HCSS HeavyBid. Primary pricing engine and system of record for the estimate. Proficiency required; B2W (Bid2Win) experience translates.

Microsoft Excel. Detailed run-by-run storm and sewer quantification workbooks.

AutoCAD or Trimble Business Center. Reading and working from civil design files.

Other. SharePoint, OneNote, Adobe, Microsoft Office, and other software as needed.

Bid Preparation

Must have a thorough understanding of the scope, plans, and specifications of the job.

Conduct the page turn with the takeoff estimator before takeoff begins — a page-by-page review of the plans to establish complete scope and capture findings for the project record.

Prepare a complete and thorough takeoff of the work required. Takeoff must be comprehensive and reproducible.

Identify the subcontractors and vendors required for the project being bid, and the scope of work required for each trade.

Prepare and transmit RFQs to subcontractors and vendors in a timely fashion and with the proper information, so that a complete bid will be received. Level the pricing received.

Conduct a site visit with sufficient time prior to bid date to allow time for RFIs. Determine at a minimum ingress and egress routes, existing site conditions, dewatering requirements, and underground and overhead obstructions, and confirm the geotechnical report.

Apply labor, equipment, and crew production rates for each activity of work being self-performed by Landmark. Recommend rates, shrink and swell, undercut, and weather assumptions for review; final production rates, contingency, and margin are set with the Chief Estimator and Director of Estimating.

Accurately complete estimates in a minimum amount of time, and manage multiple estimates at the same time.

Must be willing to work extended hours when required by the bid schedule.

Bid Package Submittal

Prepare and submit a bid package with a professional appearance that reflects Landmark's desire to excel on the project for the customer.

The proposal package requires above-average technical writing skills that will protect Landmark and reflect our professionalism.

The proposal shall have a thorough description of the scope of work including terms, exclusions, clarifications, and assumptions.

Conduct negotiations with the customer that will inspire trust and confidence.

Respond promptly and effectively to customer requests.

Follow up with the customer until the outcome of the bid is determined.

Post-Award Handoff

On award, finalize the bid record so that it matches the awarded contract amount.

Prepare the turnover package for the Preconstruction and project management teams so they gain a comprehensive understanding of the project. This includes but is not limited to pre-bid correspondence, unusual or specific contract terms that affect the project, final bid drawings, unusual conditions or activities highlighted, job setup reports organized in the estimating software, and organized subcontractor and vendor quotes.

Conduct the internal turnover meeting with the project team promptly after award, and provide setup packages to all participants.

Prepare for and attend preconstruction meetings with the customer. Ensure the project management team has sufficient preparation prior to the meeting.

Remain involved in subcontractor and vendor selection after award.

Identify, negotiate, and obtain buyout savings from subcontractors and vendors, while adhering to Landmark's policy against bid shopping.

Communication

Communicate openly with Division Managers, Equipment Manager, Shop Manager, Safety Manager, Human Resources, Project Managers, other Estimators, Superintendents, Foremen, and all internal personnel.

Communicate well and maintain relationships with owners, engineers, inspectors, and other external customers.

Deal effectively with conflicts with team members as well as all internal and external customers.

Competence and Development

Maintain technical competence on software and management systems.

Adhere to administrative policies and procedures.

Take ownership of the project; take charge, make good decisions, avoid excuses.

Exhibit leadership qualities and set an example for other team members to follow.

Senior Estimator: take an active role in teaching and developing other Estimators.

Responsible for proper usage and maintenance of tools and equipment provided.

Participate in personal career development programs and services, including academic credentials, certifications, and ongoing professional development through conference courses, seminars, workshops, supervised practice, presentations, and other training opportunities.

Customer Service

Establish and maintain good relationships with customers.

Inspire confidence with customers; respond quickly and effectively.

Support the Preconstruction and project management teams through project closeout as requested.

Senior Estimator: minimum ten years, including complex multi-phase sitework and utility packages.

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and standards of earthwork, storm drainage, water and sewer, base, and paving.

Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to project sites for site visits and pre-bid meetings.
