Summary
The Inventory Control Lead is an inventory professional responsible for inventory accuracy, inventory-control processes, and formal inventory investigation within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role owns cycle-count and physical-inventory programs, inventory audits, discrepancy investigation, transaction review, root-cause analysis, and inventory-control procedures while serving as the primary technical resource for inventory integrity.
The position works closely with Finance, Purchasing, Planning, Material Handling, and other internal partners to reconcile inventory differences, determine corrective actions, and improve inventory controls. The Inventory Control Specialist owns the control process, formal analysis, documentation, and follow-through required to prevent recurring inventory issues.
Responsibilities
- Own inventory accuracy and inventory-control processes across warehouse and applicable manufacturing inventory locations, including the development, documentation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of inventory-control procedures, standard work, and work instructions.
- Develop, administer, and monitor the cycle-count program, including ABC inventory analysis and classification, count frequencies, scheduling, execution requirements, reconciliation, documentation, follow-up, and periodic review based on inventory value, transaction activity, usage, risk, and other business requirements.
- Coordinate and lead formal physical inventories and inventory audits, including preparation, count procedures and assignments, execution, reconciliation, variance investigation, documentation, corrective actions, and verification of physical quantities, locations, inventory status, transaction accuracy, material traceability, and procedural compliance.
- Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies through physical verification and review of labels, locations, transaction history, ERP activity, receiving, transfers, production transactions, scrap, returns, and other applicable inventory activity; perform formal root-cause analysis, identify corrective and preventive actions, and maintain documentation of significant discrepancies, findings, approvals, actions, and resolution.
- Review ERP and inventory transactions for accuracy and completeness, identifying incorrect, incomplete, duplicate, delayed, or missing transactions and coordinating required inventory corrections and system adjustments in accordance with established approval requirements and financial controls.
- Serve as the primary Warehouse & Logistics resource for Finance on inventory matters, including discrepancy research, reconciliation questions, inventory adjustments, audit requests, physical-inventory results, and month-end, quarter-end, and year-end reconciliation activities; provide supporting transaction history, physical findings, root cause, and recommended resolution.
- Own and coordinate the Excess & Obsolete (E&O) inventory review process, including recurring reviews and meetings, inventory status, action ownership, follow-up, resolution, and escalation; partner with Purchasing on aging material, excess or obsolete inventory, supplier-related discrepancies, and other inventory concerns requiring Purchasing action.
- Partner cross-functionally with Material Handling, Production, Planning, Purchasing, Finance, Quality, and other internal teams to execute inventory-control activities and resolve inventory issues, while retaining ownership of formal discrepancy resolution and root-cause documentation.
- Identify recurring inventory discrepancies, transaction errors, process failures, and control weaknesses and implement or recommend sustainable corrective, preventive, and continuous-improvement actions related to inventory accuracy, ERP transactions, warehouse organization, material traceability, standard work, and inventory-control effectiveness.
- Train and provide technical guidance to Material Handling employees and other applicable personnel on cycle-count procedures, inventory transactions, inventory-accuracy requirements, and inventory-control standard work; monitor compliance with established procedures and address or escalate deviations that create inventory risk.
- Develop, maintain, and communicate inventory-control reporting and metrics, including inventory accuracy, cycle-count performance, inventory adjustments, recurring discrepancies, physical-inventory results, E&O actions, and corrective-action status; communicate significant issues, trends, risks, and unresolved actions to the Warehouse & Logistics Manager.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Progressive experience in inventory control, warehouse, manufacturing, material handling, supply chain, or a related operations environment.
- Strong working knowledge of inventory-control principles, cycle counting, physical inventories, inventory reconciliation, material movement, and ERP transactions.
- Experience with ERP/MRP and/or warehouse management systems, including reviewing transaction history, identifying transaction-related inventory errors, and supporting inventory reconciliation.
- Strong experience with MS Office, Microsoft Excel, and data-analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to reconcile, analyze, and interpret inventory information.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including structured root-cause analysis and corrective-action methodologies, with the ability to identify trends and distinguish isolated errors from systemic inventory-control issues.
- Strong communication, cross-functional collaboration, organization, and follow-through, with the ability to work effectively across Finance, Purchasing, Planning, Production, Quality, and Material Handling while managing multiple investigations, audits, corrective actions, and improvement activities through completion; demonstrated commitment to accuracy, accountability, quality, and continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience owning or administering formal cycle-count and physical-inventory programs, including ABC inventory classifications, count frequencies, reconciliation, and variance investigation.
- Experience performing inventory audits, documenting findings, coordinating corrective actions, and supporting internal or external audit requirements.
- Experience partnering with Finance on inventory reconciliation and variance investigation, including research and resolution of inventory discrepancies.
- Experience coordinating Excess & Obsolete (E&O) inventory reviews, action items, and follow-through to resolution.
- Experience developing, documenting, maintaining, and improving inventory-control procedures, work instructions, and standard work, including providing technical guidance and training to applicable personnel.
- Experience with Lean manufacturing and continuous-improvement methods, such as 5S, Kanban, kaizen, and standard work.
