GENERAL SUMMARY
Under supervision of the Director, Assistant Director and Working Foreman, performs maintenance and repair work and operates moderately heavy equipment to maintain Township streets and property.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates light to moderately heavy and complex equipment such as loaders, backhoes and rollers
- May advise or provide training to Laborer employees.
- Performs manual labor and maintenance work related to the upkeep of Township streets, grounds and facilities .
- Locates and marks areas for safe digging and / or for PA One Call purposes.
- Repairs roadways and road beds; grades roads, repairs ditches and shoulders, dumps and spreads gravel; applies hot top and patches to surfaces and the like.
- Installs and maintains drainage culverts.
- Performs minor building repairs where structural integrity is not at issue.
- Operates dump trucks, bucket trucks, backhoes, tractors, boom mowers, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment and other related equipment . “
- Has the ability and proper licensing to haul heavy equipment on trailers .
- Empties trash cans and cleans up litter/debris at Township facilities and along roadways; including removal of dead animals/wildlife .
- Performs drainage maintenance activities. Installs, maintains and repairs catch basins and associated piping.
- Paints road lines, handicap spaces, crosswalks, stop lines, parking space lines and the like.
- Replaces damaged sign posts, worn or weathered signs and the like.
- Adheres to all safety rules and regulations.
- Performs lawn and grounds maintenance to include mowing, raking, watering, weeding, tree/bush trimming and removal, etc.
- Cleans and maintains shop, trucks, tools and equipment used; performs routine maintenance, service and repair on equipment used.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Performs various labor-intensive tasks; includes lifting of heavy materials, shoveling and sweeping. Performs duties of general Laborer in maintenance and construction work when not operating equipment.
- Performs flagger and work zone traffic control duties as directed.
- Loads truck with appropriate equipment for daily tasks.
- Assists staff from other Township departments and/or divisions as needed.
- Behaves in a professional and courteous manner when interacting with the public and other employees.
- Operates various power driven tools and/or machinery as required, such as chain saws, pruning equipment, gasoline powered hedge trimmers or other similarly sized equipment.
- Performs snow and ice control operations on public roads. Drives snow plow and applies snow/ice control materials.
- Clears snow from sidewalks, recreation paths and parking areas at Township facilities as directed.
- Attends training, workshops and classes related to job duties. Obtains certification grade levels as requested.
- Performs routine building maintenance tasks and minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs.
- Operates vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs other related duties as requested.
Requirements:SPECIAL SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work weekends when scheduled, be on call periodically, and respond to emergencies on short notice.
- Required to be on call for snow/ice control operations.
Education and Experience
- High School diploma/GED
- Valid PA CDL Class A
- Minimum of one year of experience operating light to moderately heavy equipment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and enforce pertinent ordinances, policies and instructions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to maintain various records and reports.
- General knowledge of computers and related software.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of a variety of light and moderately heavy equipment; use of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of mechanical operation and maintenance of diesel and gas trucks and moderately heavy construction equipment.
- Knowledge and skill of practical, general lawn care practices.
- Knowledge of the proper and safe use of power and hand tools, ladders, generators, extension cords, and other related equipment.
- Knowledge and skill necessary to safely perform snow removal, salting, sanding and related operations under various severe weather conditions.
- Strong skills in the operation and manipulation of snow plows, trucks and other equipment under all weather conditions.
- Good physical condition is required to perform physical labor.
- Ability to work alone or with others and to work with minimum supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Basic plumbing, painting, carpentry, electrical, mechanical and landscaping skills.
- Ability to work from heights including ladders and elevated platforms

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
- CDL – Class A
- Flagger certification (or must obtain flagger certification within 6 months of being hired).
- Forklift certification (or must obtain forklift certification within 6 months of being hired).
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Lawn and garden equipment, hand and power tools, pavement saw, chain and other saws, snowplows, dump trucks, bucket trucks, backhoes, tractors, jackhammers, boom mowers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, pressure washers, and other light to heavy equipment.

Driving for extended periods of time under a variety of conditions is required.
