The Patient Access Services (PAS) Specialist serves as a primary point of contact for patients, families, and referring providers, both in person and by phone, at the Avel Gordly Center for Healing. This fully in-person position operates Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and requires a strong commitment to cultural awareness, demonstrated through respectful and effective interactions with patients, coworkers, and staff. Consistent, reliable attendance and punctuality are essential to ensure appropriate front-line coverage and continuity of patient care operations.
The role supports patient access and clinic operations through scheduling, registration, insurance verification, and front desk services. Responsibilities include gathering and accurately documenting patient information, obtaining required authorizations, managing appointments, and supporting point-of-service activities such as check-in/out, payment collection, and ensuring completion of required forms. Flexibility is essential, as duties may shift across functions based on clinic needs.
The PAS Specialist plays a central role in coordinating the new patient intake workflow, including managing incoming referrals, ensuring all required documentation is complete, and facilitating communication with patients and referring providers to support timely access to care. The PAS Specialist also triages and documents patient phone calls in Epic, routing requests appropriately to providers or care teams. This position may be required to provide coverage for the Intercultural Psychiatric Program (IPP) PAS team, as needed and directed by the manager. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and effective communication are essential to support high-quality, patient-centered care aligned with OHSU’s mission.
Required Qualifications
- Six months of work experience in a medical office setting, including high volume direct patient contact OR one year of work experience in a high-volume direct public contact position
- Successful completion of a formal OHSU Administrative Internship Program will substitute for one year experience.
- Basic computer keyboard skills, including typing of 30-45 wpm.
- Complete successfully the required initial training and core competency assessment before or during the trial service period Complete all required update modules. Maintain core competencies and demonstrate continuous application of these skills throughout the period of employment.
- Successful completion of the OHSU Language Services Exam.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
