Overview

Founded in 1994, Surveying And Mapping, LLC (SAM) is a nationwide leader in geospatial and construction-phase solutions. With more than 50 offices and 1,600 professionals, we deliver the scale, technology, and expertise needed to support projects of any size. SAM streamlines project delivery through a single, coordinated team, offering in-house capabilities across land surveying, aerial mapping, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), utility coordination (UC), GIS, BIM, and construction engineering inspection (CEI).

By combining advanced technology, digital workflows, and decades of experience, we provide accurate, actionable data that helps clients move critical infrastructure projects forward with confidence. At SAM, you’ll be part of a team that values innovation, growth, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the built environment.

Responsibilities

SAM's Digital & Data Services group helps electric utilities turn complex infrastructure data into trusted, governed, and interoperable network models. We advise transmission and distribution utilities on how to manage their electrical network models across the full lifecycle—planned, designed, as-built, as-operated, and retired—and how to evolve from fragile, point-to-point model exchanges to governed model flows across GIS, asset management, planning, protection, and operations systems.

We are looking for a mid-level consultant to join SAM’s Digital and Data Services division, with a primary goal of contributing to our Network Model Management (NMM) practice ideally in the areas of electric and gas utility industry. You will support client-facing engagements that include current-state assessments, target-state architecture, data governance design, integration delivery, and roadmap execution. You will work alongside senior architects and utility subject-matter experts to deliver practical, high-value outcomes for clients modernizing their grid data foundations.

This is a consulting role. You will contribute directly to the kinds of projects our team delivers today: network model management maturity assessments, vendor selection and RFP support, canonical data modeling, validation and quality-gate design, and integration flows connecting systems such as ESRI Utility Network, Work and Asset Management, EMS, ADMS, DERMS, Network Planning, and SCADA platforms.

  • Support client engagements focused on network model management, model governance, enterprise data integration, and digital transformation initiatives for electric and/or gas utilities.
  • Help assess current-state model sources, consumers, ownership, and pain points (with emphasis on networks and assets) and translate findings into clear recommendations.
  • Contribute to target-state architecture and canonical model design, including data flows between GIS, EAM, network planning, design, operations, protection, and analytics systems.
  • Develop and document data governance artifacts: ownership and stewardship models, quality rules, workflow design, lineage, and lifecycle management.
  • Design and help implement model validation, transformation, and publication patterns that produce traceable, trusted outputs for consuming systems.
  • Assist with vendor evaluations, RFP development, requirements definition, and implementation roadmaps.
  • Produce clear, client-ready deliverables—assessments, diagrams, requirements documents, and presentations—for both technical and executive audiences.
  • Collaborate with SAM geospatial, engineering, and integration teams to connect field/GIS reality, enterprise asset data, and electrical model governance.

Qualifications
  • 4–8 years of professional experience in the electric utility industry or in consulting/technology roles serving electric utilities.
  • Strong preference for hands-on experience in electric transmission & distribution (T&D) utilities, specifically focused on networks and asset subject areas within network planning, design, or operations business functions.
  • Working knowledge of one or more core utility domains: transmission or distribution network modeling, GIS, asset/EAM systems, planning, protection, EMS/SCADA, or operations.
  • Familiarity with how utility systems exchange model and asset data, and an understanding of the challenges created by point-to-point integrations and manual reconciliation.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to profile data, identify quality issues, and document processes and requirements clearly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce professional deliverables and present to client stakeholders.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative, client-facing consulting environment with shifting priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (electrical engineering preferred), computer science, information systems, geospatial science, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites as project needs require (typically light to moderate).
Desired Experience (Preferred, Not Required)
  • Experience with or a working understanding of the IEC Common Information Model (CIM), including CIM profiles, extensions, or CIM-based model exchange. Candidates with genuine curiosity and a desire to grow their CIM expertise are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Exposure to network model management systems (NMMS) or model-management workflows across transmission and/or distribution for both electric and gas.
  • Hands-on experience with utility platforms such as GIS (e.g. ESRI Utility Network, GE Smallworld), Asset Management (e.g. IBM Maximo, SAP/PM), Network Analysis Tools (e.g. Siemens PSS/E, Siemens CAPE/APA, ASPEN, CYME, DNV Synergi, Digsilent PowerFactory), EMS (e.g. AspenTech, GE, Siemens, ABB), ADMS (e.g. AspenTech, GE, Siemens, Schneider, Oracle, ACS, Hitachi), DERMS, or MDMS.
  • Experience with system- and data integration patterns—API/event design, transformation, and validation automation.
  • Experience with data governance frameworks, semantic modeling, or metadata management.
  • Consulting experience delivering assessments, roadmaps, or implementation support for utility clients.
  • Familiarity with DER integration, advanced analytics, or digital twin use cases in a grid context.
