Controller in Washington, District of Columbia at American Trucking Association

The Controller shares responsibility with the CFO to manage and develop financial services, systems, procedures and controls for ATA and affiliated entities to meet business and reporting needs, as well as audit and legal requirements. The Controller should be an experienced and detail-oriented finance/accounting professional with a sound knowledge of GAAP. Candidates for the Controller position will have held finance roles of increasing responsibility including the ability to maintain a high-level perspective on the accounting and finance processes, while conducting very detailed work daily.

The Controller directly supervises accounting functions, including Payroll Accounts Receivable, Government Contracts, General Ledger, Senior Accountant and Systems Administration; assists in developing the department budget, certain payroll related costs, investments, and inter-company activity and assists in reviewing the overall ATA budget; and interacts with all ATA staff, other departments, accounting system consultants and vendors, external auditors, banking representatives, investment advisors and actuaries

The incumbent is expected to adhere to company policy and procedures, promote and foster a team-based work environment. They will demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and have the ability to manage and prioritize workload. They will have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive and professional disposition. They must consistently report to work on time prepared to perform duties of the position.

Travel is required less than 5% of the time.

Education/Relevant Experience – BS/BA in Accounting or completion of CPA exam required plus 5-7 years' experience in accounting with payroll, budgeting and financial statement experience and prior supervisory experience required.

Skill Requirements – Must have strong written and oral communication skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to work with a variety of people to reach solutions. Solid understanding of GAAP, accounting, financial management and related compliance requirements for the associations. Ability to manage a wide variety of simultaneous projects and assignments to meet deadlines and support staff in meeting department deadlines and goals. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial staff. Keen analytical, organization, and strong project management skills required. Advanced MS Excel and experience with accounting databases, payroll systems and report writing tools is required. Microsoft Dynamics SL experience is preferred.

Professional Certification and Affiliations – CPA preferred.
