About the Software Engineer III Position:

As a Software Engineer III at Avalon, you’ll serve as a senior technical contributor within your team, leading the design and development of scalable, high-quality software solutions that support our business goals. You’ll take ownership of complex features and projects, guiding them from concept to delivery while ensuring technical excellence and alignment with team objectives.

While your primary focus will remain within your team, you may occasionally take on project lead responsibilities—coordinating efforts, aligning timelines, and ensuring successful delivery in collaboration with product and design partners. You’ll also work closely with our principal engineers and architects to help shape technical direction, contribute to architectural discussions, and ensure consistency across systems.

You’ll be a key voice in mentoring junior and mid-level engineers, conducting thoughtful code reviews, and championing best practices in software development. This is an opportunity to deepen your technical leadership, influence the evolution of our systems, and contribute meaningfully to a collaborative and innovative engineering culture—all while staying hands-on with code and close to the team’s day-to-day work.

This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon's corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Software Engineer III – Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and development of scalable, high-quality software solutions that align with business goals and technical strategy.
• Take ownership of complex features and projects, guiding them from planning through implementation, testing, and deployment.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to define technical requirements and ensure successful project delivery.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and decisions, working closely with principal engineers and architects to ensure consistency and long-term maintainability.
• Serve as a technical mentor to junior and mid-level engineers, providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
• Conduct and lead code reviews, promoting best practices in code quality, testing, and maintainability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex application and integration issues, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term solutions.
• Actively participate in all phases of Avalon’s Agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
• Occasionally take on project lead responsibilities, coordinating technical efforts within the team and ensuring alignment with timelines and deliverables.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of how technical solutions support business operations and contribute to strategic goals.
• Build and apply deep domain knowledge of health plan operations and related systems to inform technical decisions.
• Participate in the on-call rotation to support critical software systems, demonstrating leadership and accountability for production stability.
