Position Summary (Part-Time On-Call Youth Care Worker – Shelter)

Primary responsibilities include providing direct care, supervision, and behavior support for youth ages 5–17 in a residential shelter setting on a part-time, on-call basis. This role supports overall shelter operations during scheduled shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and daytime coverage as needed. Staff must maintain flexibility and be available to respond to staffing needs, including short notice and emergency coverage.

Responsibilities include supporting youth with daily living needs such as hygiene, meals, medication administration, behavior management, transportation, documentation, and participation in structured activities that promote safety, stability, and wellbeing.

Schedule: Part-time, on-call. Shifts vary and may include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and emergency coverage. Flexibility is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly responsible to the Emergency Shelter Manager and Housing and Stabilization Director
  • Provide direct care, supervision, and behavior management for shelter residents to ensure safety and wellbeing
  • Support personal hygiene (bathing, oral care, grooming, clean clothing)
  • Monitor health status, emotional/behavioral needs, and provide appropriate de-escalation and conflict resolution
  • Administer medications per policy and documentation requirements
  • Change and wash soiled bedding as needed; ensure bedding is changed at minimum every 3 days per policy
  • Complete laundry duties for youth clothing and bedding as assigned
  • Prepare and serve healthy meals and snacks in accordance with CACFP and shelter menu standards
  • Maintain cleanliness of all shelter areas including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, dining, and common areas
  • Clean and sanitize after meals, store and label food appropriately, dispose of outdated items
  • Clean program van and outdoor play areas as needed
  • Facilitate or support recreational, cultural, educational, and enrichment activities for youth
  • Provide case management support including documentation, intakes, discharges, and maintaining accurate records
  • Support transportation of residents and maintain required driving logs and vehicle cleanliness
  • Supervise parental visits as assigned
  • Provide emotional support and connect youth to appropriate resources and supports
  • Work collaboratively with other Youth Care Workers to enforce shelter policies and ensure consistent care
  • Perform telephone coverage, screen referrals, and provide information to community members as needed
  • Follow posted on-call schedule and respond to emergency staffing needs when contacted
  • Attend required staff meetings when scheduled or assigned
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience:

  • AA degree in Human Services, Child Development, Education, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience working with youth in residential, therapeutic, classroom, or group settings preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of American Indian culture, values, and family systems required
  • Experience working with youth exhibiting challenging behaviors required
  • Ability to work effectively in crisis and high-stress environments

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stair climbing
  • Ability to perform cleaning, lifting, and physical care tasks repeatedly throughout shift
  • Must have valid Minnesota Driver’s License and pass DHS background study

Work Environment

  • Residential shelter setting with moderate noise level
  • Exposure to dynamic and sometimes high-stress youth behavioral situations
  • Work performed across varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
