About This Position
The Laboratory Manager provides comprehensive operational, technical, quality, and administrative leadership for Laboratory Services. Working in close collaboration with the Director of Laboratory Services and the Medical Laboratory Director, this role ensures safe, compliant, efficient, and high-quality laboratory operations across all service areas. Responsibilities include staff leadership and development, regulatory compliance, quality management, budgeting and financial oversight, scheduling, and continuous performance improvement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
- Provide direction and oversight for laboratory operations through supervisors and staff.
- Coach, develop, and evaluate staff performance.
- Participate in recruitment, hiring, corrective action, and termination decisions.
- Promote a positive organizational culture emphasizing safety and service excellence.
- Ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, and timecard accuracy.
Laboratory Operations & Technical Oversight
- Oversee daily operations across all laboratory departments.
- Serve as technical and operational resource for laboratory issues.
- Maintain clinical competency and perform bench duties when needed.
Quality, Regulatory & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and organizational policies.
- Oversee quality assurance, incident reporting, and corrective actions.
- Prepare and lead the annual Quality Management Report.
- Manage CAP surveys and accreditation readiness.
- Maintain policies, procedures, and document control systems.
Financial & Administrative Management
- Manage the laboratory budget and financial performance.
- Identify opportunities for efficiency and performance improvement.
Systems, Training & Competency
- Ensure training and competency completion via HealthStream and MediaLab.
- Support continuous professional development.
Education/Licensure/Certifications/Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field required.
- Master’s degree in Healthcare Management preferred.
- Five (5) years of progressive laboratory leadership experience required.
Licensure & Certification
- Current laboratory certification required (MLS, MT, MLT, CLS, ASCP or equivalent).
