Job Description

L'Arche Comox Valley is an intentional community of people with and without intellectual disabilities sharing life together. As part of our mission to reveal the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, we support people in our day programs to access opportunities in our wider local community.

The Day Support Assistant is an active, supportive role providing direct care and assistance to persons with developmental disabilities. The Day Support Assistant assists individuals to gain new life and relational opportunities, and skills. They may also assist in the maintenance of safe, clean, comfortable environments; the maintenance of appropriate documentation and records; the implementation of individualized goals and/or Behavior Support Plans; and the maintenance of appropriate communication with individuals, L’Arche homes, families, guardians, professionals, other team members, and Community representatives.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and foster a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere based on the individual characteristics and meaningful participation of all Program Members.
  • Provide respectful and high-quality direct care supports and skill building for core members that encourage independence, choice, and person-centred approaches.
  • Help plan and participate in inclusive celebrations and traditions in the home that are representative of Program members.
  • Support, respect, and participate in Program traditions and the spiritual life of the Program and community.
  • Keep up to date and accurate records in all areas as directed: financial, medical, daily journals, medication, etc.
  • Assist the Program leader in ensuring maintenance and upkeep of the physical program, vehicles, and all Program equipment and supplies.
  • Actively participate in a regular and consistent schedule of individual roles and goals meetings, team meetings, and circles of learning.
  • Participate in annual review conversations and goal setting.
  • Adhere to all policies, guidelines, and regulations of L’Arche Comox Valley, our Board, and the Department of Community Services.
  • Articulating our values and mission in day-to-day work and supporting others to articulate our values and mission.
  • Supporting other L’Arche Comox Valley programs, homes, or facilities on an ad hoc basis when required and directed to do so by the Program Leader.

Qualifications, Skills Needed, and Position Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English and ability to effectively articulate thoughts and ideas in a team setting.
  • Clear police check and vulnerable sector screening.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certificate.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to be flexible and respond to the changing needs of our members.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and follow through on commitments in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and grow – and to give and receive feedback.
  • Valid BC driver's licence and willingness to drive.
  • Ability to walk up to 5km per day and lift 25kg

Working Conditions and Physical Environment:

  • Program Assistants spend most of their time in one of our program buildings, but may need to support people in their homes or outside of our programs. This includes walking outside.
  • From time to time, Day Support Assistants may be required to attend training outside of L’Arche Comox Valley's premises.
