About This Position

POSITION TITLE: Transportation Director

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Operations Director

CONTRACT YEAR: Twelve Months

POSITION GOAL:

Plan safe, efficient and economical bus service for all students entitled to transportation to Avant Garde Academy by developing and originating school bus routes, schedules, reports, hiring and supervising drivers, and ensuring proper maintenance and inspection of the fleet.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Administer the Transportation program and supervise transportation personnel in accordance with statutes, policies, regulations and directives from the Operations Director.

Demonstrate initiative by identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement and take appropriate action.

Use routing and scheduling techniques to develop bus routes and schedules.

Plan bus routes and schedules to ensure that all eligible students are afforded safe, adequate, efficient and economical transportation services.

Evaluate routes and make route schedule changes during the school year so as to maintain the goals of the position as required by prudent practices of student transportation and fleet service administration.

Maintain in the transportation department a complete set of updated synopsis, schedules, route directions, and seating charts.

Maintain in the Operations Office a complete set of synopsis, schedules and route directions.

Maintain all other records as shall be required by statutes, policies, regulations, or directives from the Operations Director.

Assign bus drivers to buses to ensure coverage of all routes on a daily basis.

Schedule transportation for all extracurricular, athletic and field trips.

Investigate and answer all correspondence and/or telephone calls related to Transportation.

Solve any transportation problems that arise in a timely manner consistent with statutes, policies, regulations, and directives.

Exercise personnel administration, including hiring, firing and evaluation of personnel

Participate in grievance resolution as deemed necessary.

Submit required reports and data as requested by the Operations Director.

Cooperate in the scheduling of required inspection of all buses assigned to the transportation terminal and deliver buses to assigned inspection stations in a timely manner.

Maintain records necessary to identify eligible students at each school in the area by identifying the two-mile non-transported zone around each school and the hazardous walking areas within each two-mile zone. Minimum records shall consist of an accurate, updated map of the school boundary with the two-mile zone identified by appropriate colors and hazardous walking areas noted.

Facilitate Transportation FTE counts (TFTE) during every eligible FTE count period (October and February), and process student counts successfully into the Broward County software system so that the school receives all eligible transportation funding.

Advise the Operations Director on transportation needs.

Ensure all division/department priorities and projects assist in achieving the School’s Strategic Plan.

Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of Avant Garde Academy

Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.

Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.

Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.

Follow federal and state, as well as Board policies.

Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:An earned associate’s degree from an accredited institution in transportation and logistics management, business management, computer technology or related field.

Minimum of seven (7) years of experience and/or training in the field related to the title of the position.

Knowledge of state and federal school bus transportation safety regulations and best practices.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Computer skills as required for the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:An earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in transportation and logistics management, business management, computer technology or related field.

Minimum of five (5) years of experience and/or training in the field related to the title of the position.

Prefer successful school district transportation work experience or related work experience.

Bilingual skills preferred.

CDL with S and P Endorsements

SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS – frequency, contact, purpose, and desired end result:On a daily basis, works with employees, supervisors, managers, and directors within Transportation Services to oversee pupil transportation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the School’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the Governing Board.

EVALUATION:Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy.
