Job Overview:
The Monitoring Technician is responsible for on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and provides RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. The technician delivers telemetry to in patient units and performs monitor connection/discharge, patient preparation, and teaching related to the monitor.
Qualifications:
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Telemetry and/or successful completion of a cardiac dysrhythmia course preferred.
- Successful completion of all Orientation Programs.

Essential Functions:
- Attends hospital-wide education/competency and completes unit-based competencies.
- Complies with unit and departmental scheduling guideline.
- Demonstrates competency with the operation of full disclosure.
- Demonstrates and maintains ongoing, high-level surveillance of patient’s cardiac rhythms and notifies nursing/clinicians of any rate/rhythm changes according to clinician/provider orders.
- Measures, interprets and document all elements required for cardiac rhythm strip interpretation and place on patient’s chart.
- Notifies RN of episodes of class III arrhythmias and documents appropriately. Gives reports to oncoming shift.
- Recognizes significance of a prolonged PR interval, widened QRS complex and prolonged QT interval.
- Recognizes the significance of changes in the ST/T segment: ST/T elevations and ST/T depressions.
- Documents all elements required for cardiac rhythm strip interpretation.
- Sets high and low cardiac alarm limits as per physicians order.
- Demonstrates competency in proper application of telemetry transmitter using five lead system. Initiates and discontinues monitoring equipment on admission, transfer, or discharge.
- Demonstrates positive guest relations by introducing self to patient and family; providing privacy and sensitivity and exhibiting tact and compassion at all times regardless of circumstances. Develops a rapport and cooperative relationship with nursing and clinical staff and responds to questions/requests from healthcare providers.
- Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and documentation of patient information from Central Telemetry Answers telephone/vocera and communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers. Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient rhythm
- Orients and mentors new staff members. Serves as a resource for training and troubleshooting to both Central Telemetry and clinical areas. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in work volume, emergencies, staffing and schedule changes.
- Maintains and stocks all designated equipment, including telemetry, and transport monitors. Notifies Clinical Director of missing and broken transmitters and malfunctioning cardiac monitors. Replaces defective equipment and reports failures to Biomed.
- Performs job responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Monmouth Medical Center. Performs other duties as requested.
