Position Summary
-
Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, the staff Registered Nurse (RN) in the lactation department utilizes the nursing process to prescribe, provide and coordinate care for the neonatal, infant, adolescent and adult patients to improve lactation services and to promote breastfeeding as the standard for nutrition based on current standards from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Association of Women’s Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nursing, and the World Health Organization. The staff RN is also responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel and promoting collaboration among the multi-disciplinary health care team. The staff RN functions within the permissible scope of nursing practice as defined by the Georgia Board of Nursing.

Core Job Functions
- Ascertain mother's knowledge about breastfeeding and goals for breastfeeding and include those family members that the mother identifies as significant to her. Provide resources to families and healthcare providers to educate breastfeeding as the optimal form of nutrition and improvement of health outcomes across the community.
- Utilizes breastfeeding equipment appropriately and provide information about risks as well as benefits of products. Provides education on importance of exclusive breast milk feeds and continuing breastfeeding through first year of life.
- Develop a breastfeeding risk assessment. Utilize current research findings to provide a strong evidence base for clinical practice and obtain continuing education to enhance skills and obtain/ maintain certification.
- Provides education to community to promote breastfeeding as the gold standard for first year of life. Provides education and promotes activities that promote health and prevent injury to the infant and child in an informal and formal manner. Rounds on patient population to increase awareness for staff, patients, visitors, and community members.
- Maintain collaborative/ supportive relationships with breastfeeding mothers and healthcare providers. Make appropriate referrals to other healthcare professionals and community resources. Advocate for breastfeeding families, mothers, infants, and children in the workplace.
- Provide individualized breastfeeding care with an emphasis on the mother's ability to make informed decisions. Develop breastfeeding plan of care in collaboration with the mother. Evaluate effectiveness of breastfeeding plan.
- Performs comprehensive breastfeeding assessment. Assess mother's psychological state and provide information appropriate to her situation. Assess adequate milk intake by the infant.
