Description:

Working under general supervision, conducts safety inspections and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles, heavy equipment, stationary machinery, and transfer trailers. This role provides opportunities for training and gaining experience to progress to a higher-level mechanic position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts preventive maintenance and safety inspections on company vehicles, heavy equipment, transfer trailers, and stationary machinery.
  • Ensures accurate and efficient completion of paperwork or computer database entries regarding maintenance tasks, documenting usage of parts and supplies. Utilizes Asset Essentials to generate repair orders for communication of defects or areas needing attention.
  • Undertakes minor repairs and cleaning of components as necessary, while also fulfilling other maintenance-related tasks as directed by supervisors or team leads.
  • Operates forklifts and other yard equipment as needed for job requirements.
  • Adheres strictly to company standards and policies, as well as DOT safety standards, throughout all work activities.
Requirements:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to qualify is:

  • Preferably possess one year of experience in preventive maintenance focusing on heavy vehicles.
  • Previous involvement in the waste and recycling industry is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with DOT Out-of-Service Criteria, including CHP B.I.T. Inspections and DOT compliance audits, is desirable.
  • Preferred experience includes working in maintenance facilities or similar settings involving vehicles and processing equipment such as balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors, and landfill machinery.

  • Ability to work any assigned shift
  • Work under pressure, handle stressful situations and maintain flexibility.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of activity or productivity; operating with effectiveness, and determination over extended periods of time.
  • Ability to build knowledge and expertise about current job.
  • Ability to read product information, manuals, work orders and other information necessary for performing essential job functions.
  • Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, effectively with peers, supervisors and customers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee if regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend and twist from the waist and knees; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch and talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, unload, drag and carry from 10 to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to assist the vendors with physical tasks such as unloading parts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision and ability to adjust focus.

The employee is often exposed to extreme heat and cold weather conditions as well as exposure to dust, noise and fumes found in a shop environment.
