The Lead Chaplain conducts spiritual assessments and provides therapeutic support through spiritual and religious interventions. They provide professional Pastoral Care and Counseling according to the Standards for Certified Chaplain, College of Pastoral Supervisor and Psychotherapy. The Lead Chaplain oversees and integrates spiritual care across diverse settings, including inpatient units and outpatient clinics, ensuring a cohesive and compassionate approach to patient and family support. Provides education and training to staff on spiritual care practices, cultural competence, and ethical decision-making in palliative care. Mentors and supervises the interdisciplinary team, residents, interns, and volunteers, fostering professional development and ensuring high standards of care. Serves as a spiritual care resource and consultant for the palliative care team, participating in interdisciplinary team meetings and care conferences. Advises patients in the completion of Advanced Directives. This position works within an academic environment through the Graduate Medical Education Program (GME).
Lead Chaplain Position RequirementsEducation:
- Completion of Master of Divinity degree or equivalent from an accredited Theological School.
- Four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) with a Bachelor’s degree may be considered in lieu of Master’s.
License and/or certification:
- Completion of one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) upon hire or transfer.
- Completion of four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) within two years from date of hire or transfer.
- Requires certification within Palliative Care within one year of date of hire.
- Strongly recommended that the Chaplain be certified and in good standing with a pastoral care cognate group recognized by Commission/JCAPS or is actively seeking certification.
Experience:
- Three (3) years of experience in providing spiritual care in a healthcare setting, with at least one (1) year in palliative or hospice care.
