This role serves as a senior-level underwriting expert within a life insurance underwriting organization, focused on evaluating complex and high-value cases while shaping the adoption of modern, technology-enabled underwriting practices. You will act as a trusted authority on difficult risk assessments, ensuring decisions are both competitive and fully compliant with internal guidelines, mortality expectations, and regulatory standards. The position blends deep technical underwriting expertise with a strong focus on innovation, including automated underwriting systems, data-driven tools, and emerging technologies. You will also play a key role in guiding peers, supporting escalations, and improving consistency across underwriting decisions. Working in a highly collaborative environment, you will partner closely with distribution, reinsurance, and leadership teams to enhance customer experience and operational efficiency. - Serve as a senior technical authority for life underwriting decisions, adjudicating the most complex and high-value cases while ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines, mortality and morbidity expectations, and product standards.
- Review escalations, appeals, and reinsurance-related submissions, providing expert judgment and resolving complex underwriting challenges across teams.
- Apply deep reinsurance expertise, including treaty interpretation, retention limits, and facultative or automatic reinsurance structures, while collaborating with reinsurance partners.
- Partner with distribution and field leadership to provide consultative underwriting support, strengthen relationships, and ensure smooth case placement and customer experience.
- Champion the adoption of modern underwriting tools, automation platforms, and data-driven technologies to improve efficiency and decision-making.
- Mentor and guide underwriting peers, supporting capability development, consistent decision-making, and effective use of digital tools and processes.
- Monitor industry trends and contribute insights that support continuous improvement and strategic underwriting evolution.
- Extensive experience in individual life underwriting with demonstrated expertise handling complex, high-value cases and advanced risk evaluation.
- Strong understanding of reinsurance frameworks, including treaty language, retention structures, and facultative/automatic reinsurance processes.
- Proven ability to work with automated underwriting systems and data-driven decision tools, with openness to emerging technologies such as EHR, GenAI, and wearable data.
- Solid knowledge of underwriting quality control frameworks and audit processes, including post-issue reviews and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills with the ability to challenge precedent and develop innovative underwriting approaches.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence peers, leadership, and external partners.
