About This Position
Position Summary
The Phlebotomy Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the phlebotomy department to ensure high-quality patient care, accurate specimen collection, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards. The role is responsible for the development of departmental policies and procedures, participates in the development of new procedures, ensures phlebotomy personnel are trained and knowledgeable of phlebotomy techniques and procedures, and complies with organizational and regulatory compliance standards. This position provides leadership, training, scheduling, and support to phlebotomy staff while fostering a culture of professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Three years of experience as a phlebotomist.
Strong knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, specimen handling, and laboratory procedures.
Certificates and Licenses:
Required:
BLS certification required or must complete BLS certification with in the first 30 days of employment.
Responsibilities
- Provides positive leadership by an environment of teamwork, open communication and customer service.
- Responsible for human resources processes including interviewing and orientating staff, ongoing performance management and timekeeping/scheduling and required documentation.
- Assists in developing financial budget to achieve corporate strategies and financial targets, manages areas of responsibility to optimize revenue and reduce costs.
- Assists in managing policies and work instructions for compliance with regulatory standards and to improve the overall operation of the facility.
- Supervise day-to-day operations of phlebotomy services, ensuring efficient workflow and timely specimen collection.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and support to phlebotomists; monitor performance and conduct evaluations.
- Develop and manage work schedules to ensure adequate coverage across all shifts and locations.
- Maintain compliance with hospital/laboratory policies, CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
- Ensure proper patient identification, specimen labeling, handling, and transport procedures.
- Collaborate with nursing, laboratory, and clinical staff to ensure effective communication and patient care.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of new phlebotomy staff.
- Monitor inventory and order phlebotomy supplies as needed.
- Assists with receiving, distributing, and sorting supplies brought to the unit.
- Investigate and resolve patient or provider concerns related to specimen collection.
- Maintain accurate records of staff competency assessments, continuing education, and quality assurance measures.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and implement best practices in specimen collection and patient care.
- Perform phlebotomy procedures as needed to support staff and patient flow.
- Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, throat or nasal swabs for laboratory testing.
- Observes all hospital isolation procedures.
- Performs venipunctures and finger sticks using the aseptic technique and in accordance with the department policy and procedure.
- Performs chain of custody drug screen collections and legal blood alcohol collections.
- Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Prepares requisitions and reports for maintenance, biomed, and information technology repairs.
- Responsible for order entry through the electronic medical record/database.
- Performs collection procedures to ensure turn-around times of 30 minutes for stats and two hours for routines.

Infection Control: This position will include initial and ongoing training in dealing with infection control. Training could include, but is not limited to, blood-borne pathogens, bodily fluids, and biohazardous materials, as it applies to your daily work environment.
