About This Position
Cardiac Cath Lab Technologist
Job Summary:
The Cath Lab tech is a vital member of the multidisciplinary team, assisting physicians in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving the cardiovascular and peripheral vascular systems. This role demands expertise in sterile technique, imaging equipment, hemodynamic monitoring, and patient care throughout the procedural continuum. The Cath lab tech will report directly to the Senior Director of Surgical Services and Cardiac Cath Lab. The Cath lab tech will work primarily in the Cath Lab but may be required to float to other areas to assist with procedures as directed by leadership.
Qualifications:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) or RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist)
- Completion of an accredited program in Radiology Technology, Paramedic, cardiovascular technology or other related field.
- BLS and ACLS certifications (PALS if pediatric patients are involved).
- Experience in cardiac cath lab, IR lab, or similar procedural environment.
- Proficiency in sterile technique, imaging modalities, and emergency response.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong understanding of cardiovascular and peripheral vascular anatomy, interventional techniques and sterile procedures
- Ability to interpret hemodynamic and ECG data.
- Skilled in operating complex imaging and monitoring equipment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- High attention to detail and patient safety.
- Physical stamina for long procedures and patient handling.
- Ability to work in high pressure, fast paced environment.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time while wearing radiation safety gear.
- Ability to lift patients as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Procedure Duties:
- Document baseline patient assessments including history, physical exam, and review of labs, ECG, and imaging.
- Collaborate with nursing, radiology, and cardiology teams to ensure seamless workflow and patient safety.
- Educate patients and families about procedures and post-procedure expectations.
- Prepare and position patients for optimal imaging and procedural access.
- Set up and calibrate monitoring equipment (ECG, BP, pulse oximetry).
- Set up and maintain sterile field for procedure
Intra-Procedure Duties:
- Assist physicians with arterial and venous access using sterile technique.
- Assist physicians during procedures as directed within scope of practice.
- Manipulate guidewires and catheters under fluoroscopic guidance.
- Operate imaging equipment (fluoroscopy, IVUS, etc) and apply radiation safety principles.
- Monitor and record hemodynamic data and ECG rhythms.
- Administer medications under physician supervision or per ACLS protocol.
- Perform point-of-care testing (ACT, ABG, troponin, etc.).
- Respond to emergencies with CPR, defibrillation, airway management, and pacing.
Post-Procedure Duties:
- Manage vascular access sites using manual compression or closure devices.
- Monitor patient recovery including vital signs, consciousness level, and access site integrity.
- Document all aspects of the procedure in the EMR.
