Organizes, prioritizes, directs, supervises and evaluates nursing care delivered by the various levels of staff. Has direct interaction with nursing staff physicians, patients, families, and regulatory agents.

The Nursing Supervisor

  • Supervises team of nursing staff to ensure care for patients of all ages, meeting all State, Federal and JCAHO regulatory requirements, and customer satisfaction.

  • Assumes accountability for assisting appropriate patient placement, resource utilization and administrative decision-making.

  • In coordination and consultation with Carilion management, communicates, organizes, prioritizes, leads, facilitates, and problem solves to ensure the success of appropriate patient placement, staff resource allocation, and bed assignment objectives.

  • Mentors staff and role models positive work behaviors.

  • Supports staffing processes; allocates/reallocates staff on a shift-to-shift basis.

  • Maintains responsibility for the quality of resident care and compliance with State and Federal regulatory requirements, JCAHO standards, and reasonable customer expectations.

  • Effectively leads conflict resolution process. Identifies and resolves customer service issues to ensure the mission, vision and guiding principles of Carilion.

  • Makes administrative decisions for the facility and, as necessary, notifies the individual taking administrative call in the absence of administrative staff.

  • Communicates regularly with staff and nursing leadership.

  • Serves as clinical resource for staff and patient care.

What We Require:

Education: Graduate of accredited program in school of nursing. Bachelor's degree preferred. If position is reporting in magnet footprint, BSN required.


Experience: Minimum of three years of nursing experience with increasing job responsibilities. In Nursing areas, Critical Care nursing experience preferred. In Rehab areas, Inpatient Rehabilitation Experience preferred. Supervisory/leadership experience preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Current Virginia RN license required. Must achieve and maintain AHA BLS-HCP, AHA ACLS, and AHA PALS certification, and CPI within six months of acquiring position. Rehab positions do not require ACLS & PALS certifications.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrates leadership and management qualities at current level practice. Must possess excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, communication skills, analytic business skills, team player, and ability to problem solve/resolve complaints. Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development in the adult and geriatric age group.
