Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Associate General Counsel based in United States.
This role offers a high-impact opportunity for a commercially minded attorney to join a fast-growing fintech environment where compliance is not just a support function, but a core part of the product and value proposition. You will operate at the intersection of payments, financial services regulation, and commercial contracting, directly advising leadership and cross-functional teams on complex legal and regulatory matters. The position provides immediate ownership across a wide range of issues, from contract negotiation and regulatory advisory work to privacy, data security, and corporate legal support. You will help shape how legal frameworks scale alongside a rapidly expanding product offering used by enterprise clients across North America. Working in a fully remote setup within the United States, you will collaborate closely with sales, product, finance, and external partners. This is a role suited for a pragmatic legal generalist who thrives in ambiguity and wants to build and influence within a lean, high-growth legal team.
In this role, you will serve as a key legal partner supporting commercial growth, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance across the organization. You will draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements while advising internal stakeholders on risk and structuring considerations.
- Partner with commercial and leadership teams to draft, review, and negotiate customer, partnership, and vendor agreements
- Advise on payments regulation, card network rules, and state/federal compliance requirements related to fintech and surcharging models
- Support the development and maintenance of internal compliance policies, frameworks, and risk management processes
- Provide guidance on privacy, data security, employment-related matters, and other general corporate legal issues
- Collaborate with external counsel where needed and ensure efficient, cost-effective legal support
- Translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable business guidance for non-legal stakeholders
This role requires a seasoned attorney with strong commercial contracting expertise and deep exposure to financial services or fintech regulatory environments. The ideal candidate is a hands-on legal generalist who can operate independently in a fast-moving, remote-first organization.
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active U.S. bar membership in good standing (NY or CA preferred)
- 5+ years of legal experience, including time at a law firm and/or in-house in fintech, financial services, or payments
- Strong experience drafting, negotiating, and managing complex commercial agreements
- Solid understanding of payments ecosystems, card network rules, or related regulatory frameworks is highly preferred
- Ability to work as a generalist across multiple legal domains in a lean legal team environment
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify and explain legal risk to business teams
- Strong judgment, autonomy, and ability to thrive in a fully remote, fast-paced setting
- Experience leveraging modern tools (including AI-enabled workflows) to improve legal efficiency is a plus
- Competitive remote compensation package (approximately $140,000–$165,000 USD base range)
- Fully remote role within the United States
- Opportunity to work at the core of a high-growth fintech focused on payments innovation and compliance
- Exposure to complex, high-impact regulatory and commercial legal work
- Collaborative, mission-driven culture with strong emphasis on ownership and autonomy
- Opportunity to shape and scale an in-house legal function in a rapidly evolving environment
- Work with experienced cross-functional teams across product, sales, finance, and compliance
