Geology Technician in Eureka, Nevada at McEwen Mining Inc

Overview:

The Geology Technician supports the Chief Geologist and geology team in ore control, geological data collection, sampling, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), ore accounting, and reconciliation activities. This position serves as a key field representative of the geology department, working closely with mine operations, survey, engineering, and drilling personnel to ensure ore boundaries are properly communicated, geological information is accurately collected and documented, and ore control practices are effectively implemented.

The Geology Technician routinely provides night shift, weekend, holiday, and off-shift coverage, serving as the primary geology department contact during assigned shifts. Responsibilities include ore control support, sample collection and management, geological data collection, stockpile and ore destination sampling, and effective communication of geological information necessary to support safe and efficient mining operations.

This position plays a critical role in maximizing ore recovery, minimizing dilution, supporting reconciliation efforts, maintaining high QA/QC standards, and ensuring accurate material classification throughout the mining process.

Qualifications

Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree, technical certification, or coursework in Geology, Earth Sciences, Mining Technology, Natural Resources, or a related field preferred.
Experience:
- Previous experience in mining, geology, ore control, drilling, sampling, laboratory operations, or related field activities preferred.
- Experience in open-pit mining operations is preferred.
- Familiarity with ore control, QA/QC procedures, and sampling practices preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:
- Basic understanding of geology, ore control, and mining practices.
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to accurately collect, analyze, and document field data.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with geological databases, GPS equipment, drone data collection, and mine software systems is advantageous.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic mining environment.

Working Conditions

- Primarily field-based position within an active open-pit mining operation.
- Frequent interaction with mine operations personnel, contractors, and technical services staff.
- Requires day shift, night shift, weekend, holiday, and occasional overtime coverage to meet operational needs.
- Regular exposure to dust, noise, changing weather conditions, and active mining environments.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions.
- Ability to walk and traverse uneven terrain in active mining areas.
- Ability to climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
