Job Description
Founded in 1901, the Northern California Golf Association is the largest allied golf association in the United States. The NCGA has roughly 200,000 members who belong to more than 1,300 member clubs throughout Northern California. The NCGA vision is “to ensure the game is vibrant, inclusive, and accessible” and is focused on enhancing the lives of Northern California golfers by helping them enjoy the benefits of golf for a lifetime. As a key partner with the USGA, the NCGA provides its members with official handicap indexes and helps oversee several critical governance areas for the game of golf. The NCGA owns and operates two golf courses (Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge), conducts more than 650 days of golf events each year, including championships and competitive golf tournaments for all abilities, and casual golf outings and trips. The NCGA also publishes NCGA Golf digital magazine and secures exclusive member discounts on products and services. The NCGA Foundation, which originally created Youth on Course, has evolved and the NCGA is also the sole member of the NCGA Foundation, which is aimed at growing the game and supporting the golf community throughout Northern California.
Position: Corporate Controller

Reports to: Chief Administrative Officer (CAO)/Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Corporate Controller position is responsible for the overall fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities across the parent organization (the NCGA) and our two affiliated entities, Poppy Holding, Inc (a for-profit entity) and the NCGA Foundation (a 501(c)(3) entity), ensuring compliance with nonprofit and for-profit financial regulations and best practices. This position will receive general guidance and is expected to work collaboratively with other members of the Accounting unit and the consolidated NCGA organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Reporting & Accounting Leadership
- Lead all accounting operations across the NCGA, Poppy Holding, Inc., and NCGA Foundation.
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Maintain responsibility for monthly close processes, account reconciliations, financial statement review, and consolidated reporting.
- Ensure accurate accounting for intercompany transactions, allocations, and multi-entity financial activities.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies and procedures that support consistency, compliance, and operational efficiency.
- Serve as the organization’s primary technical accounting resource.
Treasury, Banking & Investments
- Oversee treasury operations, cash management, liquidity planning, and cash flow forecasting.
- Manage banking relationships and related financial service providers.
- Monitor organizational cash positions and investment balances.
- Prepare investment and treasury reporting for executive leadership and Board committees.
- Support the oversight of reserve funds, endowments, and investment portfolios in partnership with executive leadership and the Board.
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
- Lead the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Ensure year-round audit readiness through strong financial controls and documentation.
- Oversee tax compliance, including preparation and filing of applicable federal, state, sales tax, property tax, and other regulatory filings.
- Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls designed to safeguard assets and mitigate organizational risk.
- Monitor compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
Strategic Partnership & Board Support
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and leadership team on financial and accounting matters.
- Support Board of Directors and Finance Committee meetings through preparation of reports, analyses, and presentations.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations that support organizational decision-making.
- Collaborate with department leaders to improve financial understanding, reporting, accountability, and resource allocation.
- Partner with the Chief Commercial Officer and other leaders to support organizational planning and strategic initiatives.
Process Improvement, Technology & Innovation
- Lead initiatives to modernize accounting processes, systems, and workflows.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, scalability, accuracy, and internal controls through automation and technology.
- Evaluate and implement emerging tools, including AI-enabled solutions, where appropriate.
- Champion continuous improvement throughout the Finance & Accounting function.
- Drive adoption of best practices that improve organizational effectiveness and financial visibility.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a team of approximately four to five accounting professionals.
- Create an environment of accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, and professional growth.
- Establish performance expectations and provide ongoing coaching and feedback.
- Build organizational bench strength and succession capabilities within the accounting function.
- Foster strong working relationships across all departments and entities.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including professional development.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with experience in a supervisory or management role.
- Demonstrated experience managing audits, preparing financial statements, and overseeing multi-entity consolidations.
- Experience with grant accounting, fund accounting, and restricted/unrestricted net asset reporting.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and IRS regulations affecting nonprofit organizations.
- Proficiency in accounting software (ideally NetSuite and/or QuickBooks) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- High degree of integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial information.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- CPA or MBA degree.
- Experience in a nonprofit organization, managing or supporting a for-profit affiliated entity strongly, and/or experience in multi-entity organizations preferred.
- Experience managing or advising on endowments, reserves, or investment portfolios.
- Background in association management, trade organizations, foundations, or mission-driven enterprises.
- Familiarity with our current accounting software (NetSuite).
- Knowledge of and passion for the game of golf (strongly preferred).
WORK SCHEDULE:
- Typically Monday to Friday, with standard business hours (8am-5pm). Occasional nights and weekends may be required.
- Occasional travel is required (roughly 5-10%).
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This is a full-time, Exempt position, with a starting salary in the range of $140,000-$160,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Some clothing will be provided, with the employee expected to source and maintain a high-standard of attire at all times. Participation in the company’s 401k plan after one full year of employment. PTO, meals, and golf benefits also included.
