As a senior technical leader, you will guide avionics integration activities, oversee complex engineering efforts, and help ensure mission-critical systems meet rigorous performance and certification standards. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, and engineering stakeholders to solve complex technical challenges and deliver reliable flight solutions. The position combines hands-on engineering expertise, system-level thinking, and leadership responsibilities within a highly technical environment. You will play a key role in advancing aviation technology while supporting programs with significant operational impact.
The Sr. Principal Flight Avionics Responsible Engineer will lead avionics integration activities, provide technical direction, and support the development, testing, and certification of aircraft flight systems. This role requires strong engineering judgment, leadership capabilities, and the ability to manage complex technical challenges across multiple teams.
- Lead avionics integration engineering activities for aircraft flight deck systems and components, with a focus on Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technologies.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for avionics subsystem testing, troubleshooting, verification, and integration activities within laboratory environments.
- Support the development, review, and verification of aircraft avionics installation requirements and certification documentation.
- Provide technical expertise on avionics integration processes, industry standards, and system-level engineering solutions.
- Lead development and coordination of system safety documentation and integration activities between PNT systems and mission systems.
- Create and review aircraft system schematics supporting air vehicle wiring diagrams and system architecture.
- Lead requirements development, analysis, and trade studies to support engineering decisions.
- Manage supplier technical activities, including design data reviews, functional test requirements, qualification activities, and system integration support.
- Support flight test activities, analyze post-flight data, and assist with resolution of technical anomalies.
- Apply technical rigor by identifying risks, raising engineering concerns, and influencing successful program outcomes.
- Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and suppliers to ensure alignment on technical objectives and delivery requirements.
The ideal candidate is an experienced aerospace engineer with strong avionics integration knowledge, systems engineering expertise, and the ability to lead complex technical initiatives. They should demonstrate experience working with aircraft systems, engineering standards, and cross-functional teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university with 8+ years of related professional or military engineering experience, or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline with 6+ years of related experience.
- Experience integrating and testing aircraft flight deck systems, avionics components, and Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) equipment.
- Experience with avionics communication protocols including MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, and Ethernet.
- Experience managing avionics suppliers, reviewing technical designs, and supporting system integration activities.
- Experience with flight certification standards such as PBN, RNAV, RNP, DO-178, DO-254, DO-200, or DO-160.
- Experience using system modeling and requirements management tools such as Cameo, DOORS, or Rhapsody.
- Ability to develop, mature, and trace engineering requirements through multiple system levels.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence technical decisions and collaborate across engineering disciplines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearance and program access.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience achieving Performance Based Navigation (PBN) certification.
- Experience designing systems following RTCA DO-254 airborne electronic hardware standards.
- Experience with RTCA DO-200 aeronautical data processing standards.
- Experience applying environmental qualification standards including RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810.
- Experience with Earned Value Management practices.
- Experience with collaboration and project tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Competitive annual salary range of $122,800 – $184,200, based on experience, education, skills, and market factors.
