Job Description

Description:

The Landscape Supervisor is a caretaker of the living canvas at Ojo Caliente, tending the gardens, grounds, and trees as an expression of our mission to steward sacred springs.

This working supervisor role blends hands-on gardening with leadership, ensuring that every path, planting bed, and view reflects a deep love for plants, flowers, and trees.

The Landscape Supervisor schedules staff, plans daily work activities, and monitors progress with an eye for both beauty and function, guiding the team to create and maintain landscapes that invite guests into calm, wonder, and connection with nature.

This is a physical working position with duties that include mowing, trimming, mulching, planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, sprinkler installation, and installation of hardscaping, all done with care for the ecosystems that hold Ojo.

A significant portion of time will be spent moving about the resort, observing how the land and its plants are responding to the seasons, weather, and guest use.

The incumbent is responsible for modeling and acting in accordance with Ojo Caliente Holdings, Inc. (OCHI) Core Values: Accountability, Authenticity, Diversity, Excellence, Gratitude, Happiness, Integrity, Mindfulness, Respect, and Teamwork

1. Leads and participates in landscaping workflow under the guidance of the Director of Facilities, aligning daily tasks with the larger vision of creating serene, welcoming, and ecologically mindful outdoor spaces.

2. Guides and evaluates staff performance with kindness, accountability, and respect, offering coaching and, when needed, thoughtful disciplinary action that supports growth and alignment with our values.

3. Communicates staff, equipment, and resource needs to the Director, advocating for tools, materials, and practices that support plant health, water stewardship, and long-term landscape vitality.

4. Creates staff schedules and addresses timeclock and related questions, balancing operational needs with the rhythms of the seasons, weather, and plant care cycles.

5. Attends daily briefing(s), receives and assigns daily tasks, and monitors progress of the crew, offering real-time feedback and celebrating moments when the landscape’s beauty and health visibly improve.

6. Oversees the care, maintenance, and inventory of landscaping tools and equipment, treating them as shared resources that support safe, efficient, and artful work with the land.

7. Oversees the maintenance of irrigation systems, including seasonal shut-down and start-up; monitors landscape water usage to discover and eliminate water losses, honoring Ojo’s springs and regional water scarcity through mindful stewardship.

8. Oversees the maintenance of tree, shrub, and plant health; develops and implements action plans to prevent and treat pests and diseases using thoughtful, environmentally conscious approaches whenever possible.

9. Trains and directs staff throughout the seasons in spring clean-up and mulching, pruning, planting annuals and perennials, deep edging, fall clean-up, and snow removal, helping them understand not just the “how” but the “why” behind each practice.

10. Performs the role of a Landscaper when needed, working alongside the crew to model pace, quality, care for living things, and pride in creating a landscape of beauty for guests and staff alike.

11. Performs other duties as assigned, including duties in other areas of the department (e.g., maintenance tasks), remembering that every action contributes to the overall guest experience and the spirit of the property.

Requirements:

1. A minimum of three years of landscape maintenance experience, including supervisory experience; resort or hospitality experience is a plus, especially in settings where the landscape is central to the guest experience.

2. Horticultural degree or certificate preferred; strong knowledge of plants and plant identification required, along with a genuine appreciation for the diversity of regional and ornamental species. Master Gardener training a plus.

3. Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to respond calmly and creatively to weather events, plant health issues, and guest impact on the grounds.

4. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form, receive and give instructions, and prepare work orders and reports (including via computer or other device), with a tone that reflects respect, clarity, and collaboration.

5. Ability to pass driver’s background check and safely operate light to heavy machinery, vehicles, and equipment, using them with care for both people and the landscape.

6. Must have reliable transportation; reliability and punctuality are critical to caring for living systems that depend on consistent attention.

7. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include nights, weekends, weekdays, and holidays, responding to seasonal changes, weather events, and landscape needs.

8. Ability to walk or stand and move about the resort (both indoors and outdoors) for eight or more hours per day; move on and climb a ladder; sit, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items weighing up to 40 pounds, often on uneven terrain.

9. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures while remaining attentive to safety, guest presence, and the living environment.

10. Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in all types of weather: cold, heat, wind, rain, snow, etc.

Due to the natural environment at Ojo Spa Resorts, all staff must be comfortable outdoors performing physical activities, able to navigate uneven ground, diverse terrain, and multiple stairs, and prepared to work in unpredictable weather conditions while maintaining a calm, grounded presence and respect for the land and its inhabitants.
