POSITION SUMMARY:

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collection and delivery of specimens. Assists with clerical task such as verifying an order, collating collection batches, clearing an un-received specimen log, cleaning and stocking trays and carts, and customer service when necessary.

CORE ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect blood and other laboratory specimens from patients using venipuncture, capillary puncture, and other approved collection techniques.
  • Verify patient identity and accurately label specimens in accordance with established procedures.
  • Prepare, process, and transport specimens to ensure integrity and timely delivery to the laboratory.
  • Follow infection control, safety, and quality assurance protocols, including use of aseptic technique and standard precautions.
  • Explain specimen collection procedures and provide courteous, professional service to patients.
  • Document specimen collection information and maintain required records.
  • Clean, stock, and maintain phlebotomy supplies and work areas.
  • Perform related clerical duties such as verifying orders and resolving specimen collection issues.
Requirements:

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of phlebotomy experience preferred; may be substituted with successful completion of a formal clinical externship

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION

  • Current phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized certifying organization (e.g., American Society for Clinical Pathology, National Health career Association, American Medical Technologists) preferred or required within six (6) months of hire
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of venipuncture and capillary collection techniques.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling, labeling, and transport procedures.
  • Knowledge of infection control and safety standards, including OSHA and standard precautions.
  • Ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients of all ages.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer and documentation skills.
