This senior leadership role is responsible for defining and executing the global scientific communications strategy across a complex, multi-asset biopharmaceutical portfolio. The Executive Director will shape how scientific evidence is translated into clear, consistent, and impactful narratives across publications, medical education, and congress activities. Operating at the intersection of Medical Affairs, R&D, and Commercial, this leader ensures that scientific messaging is aligned with pipeline milestones, regulatory strategy, and lifecycle objectives. The role provides enterprise-wide governance, building scalable infrastructure and multi-year communication plans that support both current and future therapies. It requires strong cross-functional leadership, external scientific engagement, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders across global teams and alliance partners. The environment is fast-paced, highly collaborative, and deeply mission-driven, focused on advancing science to improve outcomes in rare diseases.

Accountabilities:
  • Define and lead the global scientific communications strategy, integrating publications, medical education, and congress planning into a unified, portfolio-level framework aligned with Medical Affairs objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a multi-year scientific communications plan aligned with pipeline progression, regulatory milestones, label expansions, and evidence generation strategies.
  • Ensure consistent scientific narratives and positioning across therapeutic areas, indications, and assets, establishing enterprise-wide communication standards.
  • Own the strategic direction of publication planning, medical education programming, and congress engagement, ensuring alignment with broader scientific and clinical objectives.
  • Oversee scientific content development, including creation, review, versioning, and repurposing of materials to ensure consistency, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Manage the scientific communications budget, including forecasting, planning, and tracking across publications, medical education, congress activities, and external agency partners.
  • Lead cross-functional alignment with R&D, Regulatory, Biometrics, Market Access, and Commercial teams to ensure timely and strategic dissemination of scientific data.
  • Drive innovation in scientific communications, including digital dissemination strategies and responsible integration of AI-enabled content workflows.
  • Engage external scientific stakeholders, including key opinion leaders and academic collaborators, to support publication strategy and congress programming.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor the Scientific Communications team, ensuring strong performance management, succession planning, and capability development across functions.
Requirements:
  • Doctorate-level degree (PharmD, PhD, or MD) in a life sciences discipline; equivalent combination of advanced education and experience may be considered.
  • 12+ years of experience in scientific communications and/or Medical Affairs, with demonstrated portfolio-level leadership across multiple assets.
  • Deep expertise in publications strategy, medical education, and congress planning within a pharmaceutical or biotech environment.
  • Strong understanding of global drug development, regulatory processes, and evidence generation strategies, ideally within rare disease or specialty care areas.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute enterprise-level scientific communication strategies across complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Strong leadership experience managing and developing high-performing teams in a matrixed global organization.
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills with the ability to influence senior leaders and external scientific partners.
  • Experience engaging with key opinion leaders and academic communities in a scientific advisory or publication capacity.
  • Strong strategic thinking, organizational, and project management capabilities with attention to detail and scientific rigor.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 30% domestically and internationally, including onsite collaboration as needed.
Benefits:
  • Competitive executive compensation package including base salary, annual incentive, and long-term equity awards.
  • Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Robust retirement savings plan with employer matching contributions.
  • Generous paid time off and flexible work arrangements supporting work-life balance.
  • Life, disability, and financial protection benefits.
  • Employee wellness programs and mental health support resources.
  • Strong emphasis on professional development and leadership growth opportunities.
  • Opportunity to shape global scientific communication strategy in a mission-driven rare disease-focused organization.
