Overview

COLUMBIA Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Engineering has openings for an engineer to support design, test, and system integration of the COLUMBIA Class Main Propulsion Motor Drives and Main Propulsion System. This role provides the opportunity to oversee the development and integration of critical components into the revolutionary electric drive system for the COLUMBIA Class. The D489 MPD team responsibilities include design development and redesign efforts, qualification testing, and detailed analysis for all systems within the component including control systems, power electronics, and software, firmware, and hardware integration. Additionally, the team has a strong focus on driving the supplier deliverables, test procedures, test reports, and design to meet all applicable requirements without deviation while also identifying deficiencies and opportunities for design improvements for current and future electric propulsion plant submarine topologies. Engineers in the group will assist in MPD shipboard integration at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities and test support at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, CT, and the IPS Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) in Philadelphia, PA.

Responsibilities: The engineer hired for this position will be expected to:

    • Manage MPD software architecture design and redesign efforts
    • Verify control system design compliance with specifications and system requirements
    • Support testing and troubleshooting for MPDs at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, CT, the IPS CTF, and supplier facility
    • Support lifecycle management of software and software updates
    • Interface with government customers and supplier technical and management personnel
    • Enforce technical requirements on vendors

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • BS or MS engineering degree with technical background (Software, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, etc.)
  • 0 - 5 years of post-graduate engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Experience using Microsoft products
  • Ability to occasionally travel to remote facilities within the United States (Philadelphia, PA; Milwaukee, WI; Washington, D.C., etc.)

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in software or computer engineering
  • Experience working with government customers
  • Ability to understand macro level objectives and priorities while driving detailed level actions
  • Systems engineering experience in complex system-based products
  • Experience in control systems, power electronics, variable speed motor drives, software configuration management
  • Experience with software/hardware integration
  • Experience using MATLAB and/or Simulink
