Staff Packaging Engineer
Location: Leesburg, VA (5-15% Travel Required)

Company: VB Spine

Looking for a career where your work truly matters? At VB Spine, you’ll be part of a mission-focused team that supports surgeons during life-changing spinal procedures. We’re the largest privately held spine company and among the largest family-owned medical technology companies in the world, dedicated to innovation, surgeon partnerships, and improving patient outcomes in spine care. As a Staff Packaging Engineer in our R&D function within the Spine division, you’ll play a critical leadership role on the packaging team—designing, developing, and optimizing sterile and non-sterile packaging solutions that ensure medical devices reach the operating room safely, compliantly, and cost-effectively.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the development and management of packaging procedures, design rules, and guidelines that balance performance, cost, and reliability for both sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging
  • Create advanced packaging designs from concept through final release, including detailed CAD documentation (SolidWorks or Creo) for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging
  • Develop and maintain component specifications for all packaging levels and lead the design, execution, and analysis of packaging testing protocols
  • Partner closely with product development engineering teams to define optimal packaging solutions while managing multiple projects to meet aggressive timelines
  • Design and validate cases and trays for transportation and terminal sterilization of non-sterile devices intended for hospital use
  • Identify viable primary packaging options, develop secondary shipment packaging, and support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives
  • Write and contribute to risk management documentation (e.g., DFMEA, PFMEA) related to packaging in coordination with cross-functional project teams
  • Collaborate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure designs are optimized, manufacturable, and seamlessly integrated with VB Spine operations
  • Conduct value analysis, cost reduction activities, and stay current with emerging trends in packaging technology and materials
  • Establish yourself as a thought leader in sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging while obtaining and maintaining relevant industry credentials

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Quality Engineering, or Microbiology required
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in packaging design and development (medical device packaging strongly preferred)
  • 2+ years of experience creating packaging designs in CAD (SolidWorks or Creo preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of Quality System Regulation (QSR) and medical device packaging standards
  • Strategic thinker with excellent technical communication, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Highly detail-oriented, personally driven, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and work effectively in an office/lab setting with frequent use of hands for design and testing activities

Why VB Spine?
We believe in growing talent from within. At VB Spine, join a high-performing team, benefit from peer and executive mentorship, and play a key role in developing innovative packaging solutions that protect life-changing spinal implants and instruments—positioning yourself for growth and impact in a dynamic, mission-driven medical device company.
