Position Summary

As an MTM & Press Assembler, you will be responsible for assembling, calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing Taber physical test instruments and mechanical presses. This position performs both new builds and customer return or warranty repairs, working with equipment ranging from 3 to 20 tons, including air clutch models and related electronic and pneumatic control assemblies.

Working from technical drawings, work instructions, customer specifications, and standard manufacturing requirements, you will assemble mechanical and electrical components, wire switches and motors, perform machine alignments, calibrate test instruments, and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues. Success in this role requires strong mechanical and electrical knowledge, attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to consistently produce quality products while meeting delivery requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Assemble and calibrate physical test instruments and mechanical presses according to technical drawings, work instructions, standard specifications, and customer requirements.
• Evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate customer return and warranty units.
• Review work orders, work instructions, sales brochures, diagrams, and customer specifications to determine assembly procedures and special requirements.
• Inspect parts for defects prior to assembly and identify issues that may affect product quality or functionality.
• Assemble mechanical and electrical subassemblies, including electronic and pneumatic control boxes.
• Drill, tap, and ream holes using drill presses and portable drills as required for assembly.
• Align components and install bolts, moving parts, crankshafts, rotary cams, variable speed attachments, bearings, and other mechanical components using hand and portable power tools.
• Install quills, flywheels, solenoid assemblies, connecting rod assemblies, motors, switches, electrical and pneumatic control boxes, brackets, protective covers, fuses, transformers, hoses, and pumps according to model specifications.
• Wire switches and motors to control boxes and install required brand-name, caution, and warning labels.
• Perform machine alignment checks using dial indicators and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation.
• Operate machines to verify alignment, listen for sounds indicating potential misalignment, make adjustments as necessary, and perform required machine break-in procedures.
• Calibrate completed physical test instruments according to established procedures.
• Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems and communicate repair issues or concerns to Customer Service, Engineering, and Operations as appropriate.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe 5S workspace.
• Follow all applicable safety protocols, company policies, work instructions, and quality requirements.
• Perform additional duties as assigned based on production schedules, customer delivery requirements, and part availability.

Required Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, work instructions, checklists, and customer specifications.
• Basic knowledge of electrical assemblies.
• Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
• Ability to troubleshoot basic electrical and mechanical problems.
• Ability to safely and effectively use a variety of hand tools and portable power tools.
• Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing consistent, quality products.
• Ability to work efficiently and accurately while meeting on-time delivery requirements.
• Ability to communicate effectively with Customer Service, Engineering, Operations, and other departments.
• Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1–2 years of experience as an electrical or mechanical assembler.
• Prior experience as a machinist in a quality manufacturing environment.
• Experience assembling mechanical equipment, physical testing instruments, or similar industrial equipment.
• Experience troubleshooting electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Experience working from technical drawings and detailed work instructions.
• Experience with pneumatic systems, electrical control boxes, motors, switches, or similar assemblies.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to remain on one's feet in an upright position at a workstation for the duration of the shift while assembling MTM units or mechanical presses.
• Ability to frequently lift objects weighing 5 to 20 pounds and occasionally lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to pick up and move physical test instruments weighing approximately 50 pounds.
• Ability to extend hands and arms in any direction.
• Ability to seize, hold, grasp, turn, and otherwise work with hands to position, align, and install mechanical and electrical components.
• Ability to use hand tools and portable power tools safely and effectively.
• Ability to make fine auditory distinctions when operating machinery and making alignment adjustments.
• Ability to coordinate eyes and hands accurately and efficiently when guiding and installing parts during assembly.
• Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
• Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment while following all required safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements.
