Job Description

Level Designer

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Level Designer in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to shape immersive, tactical gameplay spaces for a third-person military shooter, where player agency, combat clarity, and strategic decision-making are at the core of the experience. You will be responsible for designing and delivering end-to-end levels that support squad-based gameplay, believable military operations, and engaging combat scenarios. Working in a highly collaborative environment, you will partner closely with artists, engineers, and production teams to translate creative direction into playable, polished environments. The role blends creative level design with technical implementation, requiring both strong spatial design instincts and hands-on engine work. You will craft combat spaces that reward planning, teamwork, and multiple tactical approaches while maintaining strong pacing and readability. This is an opportunity to directly influence moment-to-moment gameplay in a high-quality, gameplay-driven production environment.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for creating, implementing, and iterating on fully playable tactical combat levels from concept to final polish.

  • Design and build full levels end-to-end, including layout, traversal, combat encounters, pacing, objectives, and player flow.
  • Create tactical combat environments that support flanking routes, cover systems, squad coordination, and multiple gameplay approaches.
  • Script gameplay events, AI behaviors, triggers, and environmental interactions to bring missions and encounters to life.
  • Collaborate closely with art, engineering, and production teams to ensure alignment with the overall creative vision.
  • Test, debug, and iterate on levels to improve navigation, combat balance, readability, and progression flow.
  • Adjust layouts and encounters based on feedback while maintaining performance, clarity, and intended player experience.
  • Ensure level design supports core gameplay systems, AI behavior, and tactical decision-making throughout missions.
  • Communicate risks, dependencies, and production constraints clearly to ensure smooth delivery of content.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced level designer with a strong background in action or shooter games and a deep understanding of tactical gameplay design.

  • 5+ years of experience in game development with a strong focus on level design in action, shooter, or combat-driven titles.
  • Experience shipping at least one game title, ideally within the shooter genre, from implementation through final polish.
  • Strong proficiency with Unreal Engine and level editing tools, including gameplay scripting and debugging.
  • Deep understanding of combat space design, including sightlines, encounter pacing, navigation, and readability.
  • Ability to work independently while iterating effectively on feedback in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with experience working across design, art, engineering, and audio teams.
  • Solid grasp of AI-driven gameplay systems and how they influence level structure and encounter design.
  • Passion for creating clear, engaging, and tactically rich gameplay experiences.
  • Bonus: Interest in military fiction, systemic gameplay, and cinematic mission design.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary range of $80,000 – $90,000 annually.
  • Remote-first work environment with flexible working arrangements.
  • Opportunity to work on high-quality, gameplay-focused AAA-style projects.
  • Collaborative studio culture with strong emphasis on creativity and ownership.
  • Exposure to a wide range of genres, IPs, and innovative game development projects.
  • Chance to contribute to deeply systemic, tactical gameplay experiences.
  • Supportive environment focused on long-term career growth and skill development.
