August 24, 2026 – May 14, 2027: 32.5 hours/week (38 weeks)
DUTIES
The Lab Technician's primary duty is to provide support related to equipping, setting-up, maintenance, safety and delivery of laboratory/field sessions (including field trips and field courses) at Thompson Rivers University.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Maintains the inventory of supplies and course-related equipment as needed.
  2. Maintains laboratory/field work facilities by cleaning and monitoring equipment use and maintenance.
  3. Operates standard laboratory/field equipment and some specialized equipment.
  4. Provides on-going technical and professional support for students engaged in practicums and other experiential learning.
  5. Compiles statistical reports for month/year end reporting, tracking equipment usage and inventory, long-distance phone records, print services; provides annual equipment usage report and assistance with strategic inventory planning.
  6. Schedules use of Laboratory facilities for teaching/learning.
  7. Organizing and demonstrating equipment, software and instructional material in consultation with teaching Faculty.
  8. Works with Faculty to identify optimal use of Laboratory/Field equipment and technology for Laboratory/Field activities.
  9. Trains Faculty and students in the use of Laboratory/Field equipment and technology.
  10. Maintains a safe environment in classrooms and laboratories; monitors access to restricted facilities; distributes key fobs to eligible students; coordinates after-hours access lists with campus security.
  11. Participates in Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs as required by accreditation/approval standards and University protocols/policy.
  12. Works with Faculty to oversee student assistants.
  13. Assists in providing communication between department and community partners regarding student experiential learning.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Four (4) year undergraduate post secondary degree in relevant discipline or equivalent
Experience:
  • Three (3) years' related laboratory or field experience in related discipline
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
  • Demonstrated data entry skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe laboratory and field practices
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and techniques used in laboratory/field of the appropriate discipline
  • Knowledge of laboratory/field equipment appropriate to the area of the assignment
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Sitting or standing at desk for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift weights in excess of 10kg
  • Travel required within BC
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.
