Studio Gang is seeking a proactive and collaborative Communications / Public Relations Professional to join our Marketing & Communications team full-time. Reporting to the Marketing & Communications Principal, this role’s primary responsibility is to amplify the Studio’s impact by overseeing public relations activities that allow the most compelling stories about our Studio’s values, work, leadership, and offices to reach key external audiences.

The Studio is open to considering candidates at both a Manager and Director level for this position, and this role can be based in either our Chicago or New York office. At the Manager level, the ideal candidate will be seeking to build on existing media relations and event coordination skills and help elevate the Studio's work, offices, and leaders. At the Director level, the ideal candidate will also possess strong people management skills and the ability to lead global external communications strategy.

The focus of this role is the handling of media relations, events, and project communications on behalf of the Studio. It involves working closely with Studio leadership, clients, media professionals, and external partners to craft messaging, secure press placements, and seek out opportunities that enhance the visibility of the Studio and support its strategic goals. This role is part of a collaborative Marketing & Communications team, and it involves working closely with members of the team to enhance the visibility of the Studio and its leadership in strategic ways, including pitching and coordinating speaking engagements for leadership, planning events for key external audiences, and supporting internal initiatives and special projects.

The ideal candidate will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills. They will have the ability to unite visual assets with compelling writing to tell stories about the Studio that are surprising, interesting, clear, consistent, and resonant. They will bring existing relationships with journalists covering architecture, design, and culture and a sophisticated understanding of the current media landscape. They will also have a strong sense of the broader architecture and design industry and its intersection with arts and culture, sustainability, urbanism, public policy, and other areas relevant to the Studio and its work.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting Marketing & Communications Principal in development of top-level PR strategy for the Studio, its leadership, and projects, including creating tactical plans for execution.
  • Crafting and executing project-specific PR plans, including working closely with clients, collaborators, and external PR firms and coordinating project-based events.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key editors and journalists, both within and outside architecture and design, including managing outreach and pitching stories to secure strategic placements in relevant print and digital media outlets.
  • Leading the communications collateral development process, including working with project leaders, Publications & Exhibitions team, and Digital Communications Manager to ensure the timely development of design narratives, presentation drawings, and shot lists.
  • Crafting and distributing communications collateral such as press releases, fact sheets, spec sheets, and other key materials as needed.
  • Servicing press requests and coordinating press interviews for Studio leadership, including scheduling, developing talking points, providing background information on journalists and publications, and related tasks.
  • Vetting and coordinating speaking engagements for all members of the Studio.
  • Organizing tours of our offices and projects for external audiences, particularly members of the press.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date list of press contacts for the Studio.
  • Conducting media monitoring and maintaining an archive of published media coverage, including press clippings.
  • Working closely with Digital Communications Manager to ensure content strategy aligns with the Studio’s vision as well as ensure consistency in messaging and visuals across digital platforms, including website and social media channels.
  • Playing an active role in the working group overseeing the Studio’s rebranding and website relaunch, including advising external branding agency how to best integrate press and event features into new website.
  • Collaborating with the Marketing & Communications, Publications & Exhibitions, and People teams on business development and promotional initiatives as needed, including publication launches, exhibition openings, production of awards submissions, and planning of Studio-hosted events.
  • Developing strategic frameworks and workflows to improve operational efficiency within and outside of the Marketing & Communications team.
  • Managing and serving as a primary point-of-contact for external PR agencies contracted by the Studio, as needed.
  • Supporting transition to and maintenance of communications collateral and data in systems such as OpenAsset, Deltek, and Knack.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years experience handling PR, press, communications, or similar for an architectural practice
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in architecture, design, marketing, communications, or equivalent
  • Strong organizational and management abilities, with a keen eye for detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks under tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop preferred
  • Candidates with proficiency in French strongly encouraged to apply
