We are seeking Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs) and Early Childhood Assistants (ECAs) for short-shift and part-time work opportunities throughout York Region.
This role is specifically designed for educators who are interested in shorter-duration shifts, including Before and After School programs, partial-day coverage, and split shifts requested by our childcare centre partners.
These opportunities may be ideal for individuals looking to supplement their current schedule, return to the workforce gradually, gain additional childcare experience, or work flexible hours without committing to full-day jobs.
About the RoleAs a Short-shift Childcare Supply Educator, you will support licensed childcare centres when they require additional staffing for shorter periods throughout the day.
Assignments may include:
- Before School program coverage
- After School program coverage
- Before and After School coverage (split shift)
- Partial-day childcare assignments
- Other shorter shifts requested by Sentient HR's childcare partners
Please note: This position is intended primarily for shorter shifts and is not designed as a regular full-day supply role.
Depending on your qualifications and the needs of the childcare centre, you may support or lead age-appropriate programming while working collaboratively with centre staff to provide a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for children.

Depending on the assignment, responsibilities may include:
- Support the implementation of developmentally appropriate programs and activities.
- Supervise children and prioritize their health, safety, and well-being.
- Support Before and After School routines and programming.
- Engage children in planned activities, play-based learning, and positive social interactions.
- Assist RECEs and centre staff in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
- RECEs may be required to fulfill lead educator responsibilities where appropriate.
- Follow the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), public health requirements, centre policies, and Sentient HR policies.
- Support children's physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development.
- Observe children's needs and communicate relevant information to centre staff.
- Report incidents, concerns, or other issues in accordance with centre procedures.
- Build positive and professional relationships with children, centre staff, families, and colleagues
- Work cooperatively as part of the childcare centre team.
- Perform other duties appropriate to the assigned role and shift.
ECE Diploma from a recognized Ontario college or equivalent recognized qualification.
Registered and in Good Standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
At least one year of previous childcare experience and/or relevant education is preferred.
Ability to effectively support RECEs and other childcare centre staff in providing high-quality care and programming.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check within the required timeframe.
- Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to become familiar with, How Does Learning Happen? (HDLH), AQI, and CCEYA.
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel to assignments throughout York Region.
- Ability to work effectively with children from infant to school age.
- Strong communication, reliability, professionalism, and teamwork skills.
- Availability for shorter-duration shifts, including Before and/or After School hours.
- Assignments and hours will vary based on childcare centre staffing needs.
- Shifts may be shorter than traditional full-day childcare assignments.
- Morning and late-afternoon availability may be particularly valuable for Before and After School programs.
- Occasional light to medium physical effort may be required, including lifting, bending, and stooping.
- Educators must be able to work outdoors in all seasons when required by the childcare centre.
