Description:

This position holds primary safety responsibility for FX5’s Underground (UG) and Overhead (OH) electric utility crews, with particular emphasis on UG projects supporting datacenters and other mission-critical/critical-infrastructure work. As a resource for safety meetings, the training matrix, and the apprenticeship program, this position performs crew visits and observations while managing protective equipment and live line tools to keep all equipment tested and OSHA compliant. It also serves as the primary resource for incident reviews, leading root cause analysis and corrective action follow-up after investigations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Field visits are associated primarily with underground (UG) and overhead (OH) crews — including UG projects supporting datacenter and other critical-infrastructure facilities — as well as Fleet and office safety.
  • Serve as a resource for all monthly safety meetings for all employees.
  • Manages rubber glove and sleeve data base to ensure compliance with OSHA and are changed out in a timely manner.
  • Enforces and serves as a resource for all inter-company, Federal and State safety regulations for our industry, including regulations specific to underground electric utility construction (e.g., excavation, trenching, and confined space entry).
  • Is familiar with OSHA and DOT regs, including OSHA excavation, trenching, and confined space entry requirements applicable to UG vaults, manholes, and handholes.
  • Shares responsibility with Operations team for the proper training of personnel in the safe operation of UG equipment and tools (trenchers, directional boring/HDD equipment, cable pulling, splicing, and termination equipment) as well as OH equipment.
  • Conducts crew observations.
  • Assist Safety Management in managing Apprenticeship Program to fulfill both OJT and testing requirements.
  • Performs new employee orientations.
  • Perform incident investigations and find the root cause of an incident and develop corrective actions to be followed up on.
  • Administers developed and needed safety and industry training.
  • Coordinates safety oversight on UG and OH projects supporting datacenter and other mission-critical/critical-infrastructure clients, ensuring compliance with both FX5 safety standards and site-specific customer safety protocols.
  • Willingness to travel in state or to other states to support FX5 crews on storm restoration efforts.
  • Attend business partner safety meetings as an FX5 Representative.
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • College Degree in Safety not required, but preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of related industry experience or 5 years safety professional experience in the Underground/OH Electric Utility industry.
  • Prior experience supporting UG projects for datacenter or other mission-critical/critical-infrastructure clients preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Good Leadership skills
  • Thorough understanding of the practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools of the underground electric utility trade (trenching, boring, cable installation, splicing/terminations, vaults, switchgear, and transformers), as well as the overhead electric trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of underground work, including excavation, trenching, shoring, confined space, and energized cable/equipment hazards.
  • Ability to communicate safety in a non-combative and constructive manner.

Minimum Requirements

  • Pass pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug screens
  • Satisfactory results of pre-employment background check results
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record is required
  • Must be able and willing to obtain Basic First Aid and CPR Certification (Company Provided)
  • Must have basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must be able to work in and around excavations, trenches, vaults, and confined spaces associated with underground construction.
  • Must be willing to comply with site-specific security, safety, and access protocols required for work on datacenter and other critical-infrastructure job sites.
  • Must be willing to assist in any task that needs to be completed on the project.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires physical activity, including lifting, standing, or manual tasks.
  • Will involve working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Will require working in and around trenches, excavations, vaults, manholes, and other confined spaces associated with underground construction.
  • Must be open to extended times away from home as well as working holidays.
