Job Description

JOB TITLE: PRN Firefighter- Paramedic FLSA: Non-Exempt

JOB GROUP: Fire Department SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes

CLASSIFICATION: Essential


GENERAL SUMMARY

Firefighter-Paramedic performs responsible service work in fire suppression, fire prevention, vehicle rescues, land-based water rescues, emergency medical first response, hazardous materials first response, and other emergency and non-emergency requests for service.

SUPERVISION

Supervision will be provided by a Lieutenant or Captain depending on the firefighter’s assigned station. Firefighters will work under the overall direction of full-time Chief Officers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Safely respond to requests for emergency and non-emergency service; drive and operate apparatus and equipment; assist in the suppression of fires; conduct search and rescue; conduct ventilation; conduct salvage and overhaul; conduct extrication and other rescues; provide pre-hospital emergency medical care and non-emergency assistance.Operate, inspect, and maintain fire apparatus and equipment. Conduct life safety inspections of business and residences; prepare pre-fire plans and conduct private fire hydrant testing. Participate in continuing education and training programs through individual study of technical material and attend scheduled drills and classes. (Some training may require overnight travel at the City’s expense.)Conduct tours and educational programs for the public, schools, and community groups. Receive and transmit radio and telephone messages.Lead by example by adhering to, complying with, and supporting the City of Mt. Juliet’s Employee Personnel Manual, Fire Department of Mt. Juliet Chief’s Memorandums and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs), and by following and enforcing 21st century accepted fire service safety practices. Respond to requests for call-back staffing during major incidents, periods of high call volume, severe weather outbreaks, etc. Serve as Acting Officer in Charge (AOIC) in the absence of an Engineer, Lieutenant, or Captain.Serve on various formal and informal committees and work groups.Deploy locally, regionally, and nationally as part of requests for mutual aid.Perform related tasks and other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

    High school graduate or completion of a GEDBe at least 18 years of age.

MINIMUM REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

    Must hold valid driver's license Firefighter II Certification (IFSAC / Pro –Board)State of Tennessee Paramedic (PM) License (must be maintained as a condition of continued employment) Valid HEALTHCARE PROVIDER (Basic life support, CPR, AED) Certification (must be
maintained as a condition of continued employment).

    Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, visual cues or signals, and ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Environmental Factors: Essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions including smoke and fumes, hazardous chemicals and materials, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined spaces or high workplaces, extremely loud noises, and hazards or disasters natural or man-made; may encounter people with emotional stress disorders, trauma, or contagious diseases. Physical Ability: Ability to exert physical effort in strenuous work, with emphasis on climbing and balancing, but also involving frequent lifting, standing, walking both normal and uneven sometimes slippery surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, carrying, pushing, and or pulling of moderately to extremely heavy objects and materials (20-125 or greater); requires ability to constantly be in a position to drive a specialized vehicle; use of fingers, ability to grasp, and flexible wrist motions.
