Job Description

TEC Systems is a leading building management systems (BMS) contractor delivering installation, service, and analytics for HVAC controls across the New York metro area. The UX Intern supports TEC's Graphics department in creating clear, usable, operator-facing interfaces for building systems, gaining hands-on experience designing the graphics and screens that help operators understand and control HVAC systems.

Working under the guidance of the Director, User Experience & Project Success and alongside UX Designers, the UX Intern assists with design tasks, revisions, and asset organization while learning TEC's graphics standards, tools, and workflows. This is a development-focused internship well suited to a design student who enjoys detail-oriented, technical work and wants to build a foundation in UX/graphics design. Success is measured by the quality of supporting design work, dependability, and steady growth in design skills.

Key Responsibilities

Design support — Assist UX Designers with creating and revising operator-facing graphics and screens under supervision.

Apply standards — Learn and apply TEC's graphics standards for layout, naming, navigation, and visual consistency.

Asset organization — Help organize and maintain design files, templates, components, and graphic libraries.

Revisions & iteration — Incorporate feedback and redlines and iterate on designs to meet requirements.

Research & references — Research design references, gather assets, and support design exploration and mockups.

Supporting materials — Assist with diagrams, infographics, and system overviews for internal and client-facing use.

QA support — Help review graphics against standards and project requirements to catch inconsistencies.

Collaboration — Participate in team reviews and coordinate with designers and, as directed, engineering and programming.

Development — Complete assigned training and learning activities to build design skills toward a UX Designer path.

Required Qualifications

Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a degree or coursework in design, UX, human-computer interaction, or a related field.

Foundational design skills and familiarity with design tools such as Adobe Illustrator (or similar).

Interest in UX, technical illustration, and organizing complex information into clear visuals.

Strong attention to detail, organization, and eagerness to learn and take direction.

Good communication skills and a collaborative, reliable work style.

A portfolio or samples of design work (coursework or personal projects welcome).

Preferred Qualifications

Exposure to HMI/SCADA, dashboards, data visualization, or technical/interface design.
