Job Description

Fire Protection Engineer

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Fire Protection Engineer in the United States.

This role sits at the intersection of advanced fire protection engineering and next-generation energy infrastructure, with a strong focus on battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will act as a technical authority and trusted advisor, shaping fire safety strategies for complex, high-risk energy projects. The position involves designing and validating fire detection, suppression, and mitigation systems while ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards and evolving regulatory frameworks. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, regulators, insurers, and emergency response stakeholders to ensure safe and approvable system designs. A key part of the role is performing advanced risk and hazard analyses, including fire modeling and failure mode assessments. This is a highly impactful position where engineering expertise directly contributes to the safe deployment of clean energy infrastructure.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the design, evaluation, and validation of fire protection systems for energy infrastructure projects, including BESS facilities and related assets.
  • Conduct advanced fire risk assessments, including hazard mitigation analysis, failure mode analysis, heat flux studies, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable fire safety codes and standards such as NFPA, UL 9540, UL 9540A, and local fire regulations.
  • Develop and review fire protection strategies including detection, suppression, ventilation, and explosion mitigation systems.
  • Evaluate UL 9540A test reports and assess applicability to system design constraints and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare technical documentation, emergency response plans, and safety filings for authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) approvals.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, first responders, regulators, and stakeholders to integrate fire safety into project design and execution.
  • Support client engagement, business development, and proposal development for fire engineering services.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Science, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in fire protection consulting, including at least 5 years focused on energy infrastructure or BESS projects.
  • Licensed Fire Protection Engineer (FPE), preferably in California, with additional state licenses considered a plus.
  • Strong expertise in fire modeling tools such as NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and other computational fire analysis methods.
  • Deep knowledge of NFPA codes, California Fire Code, UL standards, and fire safety regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with fire suppression systems, detection systems, thermal management, and hazard mitigation design.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering and regulatory teams.
  • Certifications such as CFPS or membership in SFPE are preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and familiarity with GIS-based risk analysis tools is a plus.
Benefits:
  • Competitive annual salary range: $140,000 – $165,000
  • Flexible remote or hybrid work environment depending on preference and office availability
  • Employee ownership culture with shared success in project outcomes
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance options
  • Retirement and financial benefits supporting long-term stability
  • Paid time off, holidays, and flexible work arrangements
  • Opportunity to work on nationally significant clean energy and infrastructure projects
  • Professional development, certification support, and continuous learning opportunities
  • Inclusive, safety-driven, and collaborative workplace culture.
