JOB TITLE: Environmental Compliance Specialist
LOCATION: Santa Barbara
FLSA EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Risk Manager
POSITION SUMMARY: The Environmental Specialist is responsible for ensuring the workplace complies with all applicable EHS regulations by conducting audits, developing safety plans, training employees on proper procedures, and actively identifying and mitigating potential hazards to protect employees’ health and the environment. The individual will ensure the organization complies with all local, state, and federal regulations while fostering a culture of continuous improvement in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Partner with the Risk & Safety Manager to promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship across all departments in alignment with the MarBorg standard by conducting routine safety and environmental inspections for all locations to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Serve as a key EHS resource for management and employees by driving safety and environmental initiatives, conducting inspections in all work areas, identifying potential hazards, and fostering a proactive culture of risk prevention and regulatory compliance.
- Oversee environmental, health, and safety compliance activities, including exposure assessments, routine inspections, hazard recognition, incident management, risk evaluation, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Act as primary contact for all regulatory inspections and maintain all necessary permits and documentation for safety and operational compliance.
- Work in collaboration with the Risk & Safety Manager on investigations of workplace accidents and near misses, determining root causes, recommending corrective actions, and behavior training solutions.
- Prepare and report weekly to Senior Management, highlighting environmental compliance, audit findings, operational risks, and progress on open items and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Makes recommendations for improvements for overall safety & training, which will mitigate overall risk.
- Collaborate with the Safety Manager to support DOT compliance for drivers, including training records and driver qualification files, with all applicable DOT/FMCSA regulations, including the FMCSA Clearinghouse.
- Assist with the administration of a DOT-compliant random drug and alcohol testing program.
- Maintain and ensure all required documentation, reports, and records related to compliance are accurate and completed in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal environmental regulations and permit requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in an environmental, health and safety role in a related industry. Knowledge of the waste industry preferred.
- Working knowledge of EHS regulations and compliance
- Knowledge of the waste industry.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments and hazard analysis.
- Ability to interact with regulatory agencies.
- Solid understanding of federal, state, and local laws, including regulations from DOT, RCRA, SPCC, SWPPP, SMARTS, CUPA, CERS, and OSHA.
- Familiarity with investigating incidents and using root cause analysis techniques.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to actively listen, build and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external colleagues and stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize and successfully manage projects, programs, and timelines.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to travel to designated facilities as needed to perform the job.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Demonstrate attention to detail, organization, and deliverables, including driving projects to completion in accordance with established timelines.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years or more in an environmental, health, and safety role in a related industry.
- Comprehensive understanding of OSHA, EPA, RCRA, SPCC, SWPPP, SMARTS, CUPA, CERS, and other relevant regulations.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry put instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
